Assuming the waitlist will move once everyone makes their final selection and over the summer.

Wondering if I should stick with what we got invited for or stay on the waitlist for what we really want.

If it's kindergarten, YES I would hold out. You can name the school if you want specific feedback but I have followed this for several years now and have never seen otherwise.

I'll just add that the Chinese programs are the biggest question mark for me, although even for them #7 is pretty good for K. But they are popular programs with just one class. Even the super popular Rock Creek Forest has safely made it to 30 in recent years. Ditto Maryvale, Sligo. Burnt Mills and Page tend to go very high.

Any idea why page is so much less popular?

Page ES has an amazing principle and wonderful teachers. I think the location is difficult for some but we’ve been very happy there. DC takes the bus.

For anecdata, I’ve seen on FB that Page has even got into the 70s in the last couple of years.

I’m so sorry! That’s really tough. Are they able to still attend the same school?

We got waitlisted for RCF 3 to 1 grade.
What do you think about teachers and admin?
My kid will be going to 1 and we are not sure if you should have hope on entering? Any info about the program, student environment?

This is so helpful! We got into Page, and are thrilled but also know the home school is a good choice so debating about the commute. Hearing people are happy at Page makes a difference because I don't know much about the school at all.

I have a friend with a 5th grader at Bayard Rustin in the Chinese Immersion and he can’t speak Chinese at all. He understands a little bit can’t converse in it and can barely read it.
Total waste of time. He’s been there 6 years.

I think RCF’s popularity might have to do with the fact RCF’s full immersion began almost 50 years ago and the Page and Burnt Mills immersion programs began as two way immersion and switched to full immersion more recently. Also, RCF had the MCPS “Principal of the Year” (retired now) and has a very active PTA and parent volunteers helping to make it a tight knit community.

Page also recently got principal of the year.

It’s only part time immersion and honestly that is not enough.

I don’t know that much about the Chinese programs but we’re at Sligo Creek and I do think immersion requires more support at home than they like to advertise. Parents don’t need to speak the language but they do need to seek out reading material, summer language opportunities, etc. Our teachers have emphasized the importance of being exposed to French outside of school. We’ve been huge fans of the program but I do think it’s more work than supporting a student in the regular program, and I don’t think all the families who enrolled have been prepared for that.

I’m the PP. We were worried about the commute to Page at first too but DC loves taking the bus with friends, and it ends being a little extra childcare time for us.

Probably silver spring moms and dads? I remember it being buried in the comments of a poster who had gotten in to both Page and Burnt Mills sometime after school started in the fall.

This is at RCF, which I know is very popular. Anyone have any experience with how far the 1st grade waitlist has gone in recent years? Thank you!

Does anyone have any experience with how many -- if any -- kids get off the waitlist who are entering in 1st grade?

Thank you in advance!

That is tough and I think it could go either way. I'm not sure which school it is and if there are 1 or 2 classes, but it really depends on how many seats end up being in play (we know it's at least 2 but it could be more) and who the people are in front of you. Some years there ends up being a spot after school starts, and people are more likely to decline at that point, but other years that doesn't happen. Sorry -- I know that's an awkward limbo to be in. You could try to dig for more info about the school and possibly check with DCCAPS for historical data for the program, although without an immediate decision to make I might give them some time to get through the initial barrage of email I'm sure they're getting now.

I’m not sure but I know there was at least one November spot at RCF first grade last year and I think that kind of timing really makes a difference for getting off the wait list, since they sometimes go through several numbers to get a taker at that point.
