I remember that the last time we had a sudden early release at my school (elementary), about half the parents didn’t get the message or couldn’t get there so we had to supervise a couple hundred students for several hours.

Right before Covid happened we had a couple of early release days, maybe 6-7 years ago

Some of you have short memories. It literally happened last January.

I could see them announcing an early closure in advance, like tomorrow afternoon, to give people more time to plan. They've done that before, too. Early closures called the day of are the most disruptive and they hate doing them if avoidable.

I don't envy them the call on this one. The timing is tough. If they make a call for Tuesday and nothing happens, people will be screaming that they don't have 20/20 hindsight. If they roll the dice and it ends up being a mess in the afternoon, it will be a logistical nightmare.

Jan. 9, 2024. The announcement went out around 8:30 am that day.

DP. Which infallible crystal ball are you looking at that promises this? Tier 2 ES lets out at 3:50 and buses are often on the road until 4:30 or later. They have to make decisions based on odds and worst-case scenario, not on a gamble and a prayer.

My weather app says one inch of snow total accumulating Tuesday afternoon. I think the busses will be okay.

Yeah, we are at Tier 2 ES with a magnet program and those buses often don't leave the school until 4:30pm. I don't know what MCPS will do but this has to be a consideration.

You have a lot of faith in a weather app. Sometimes it literally can't tell you what's going on at that moment. It will say it's raining and I'll look outside and I'm like, "Uh, no it's not."
