School delayed and no sports or activities for 3 days straight just for cold weather?!?

Not really. Just look at how many closures and delays there will be in January 2025 alone.

Yes, it’s stupid. No, your child will not suffer unduly by missing a few hours of school or a few practices. Get some sleep and catch up on your reading, kids.

My high school kid knows that this is happening - why don't we know?

All childcare is delayed 2 hours too. Terrible decision

+1 I think parents should organize for legislation that requires MCPS to pay for parents' childcare costs when they require childcare providers to close and everything else (county, city, federal government) is open.

So create a middleman (MoCo govt)? You realize that any services MCPS provides is essentially paid for by parents?

Whoa are you being charged tuition? That's a scam, girl.

Yes, people have to pay for before care and aftercare. Do you think it is free? -DP

MCPS doesn't provide before and aftercare. Did you think it did?

Seriously. There is a profound problem with MCPS as a whole. We are paying this new superintendent $360,000 per year to make stupid decisions like this one. The cultural rot at MCPS runs very deep.

Voters, we are the problem. He's obviously not a serious man but the issue goes much deeper than him

Is Essie McGuire the problem? She's the constant here and she seems like she's manipulating Dr. Taylor quite a bit with her insider knowledge having worked for both MCPS and the County Council.

She’s at least part of the problem.

How so?

I just saw on the news that the wind chill temps tomorrow at 7 am are supposed to be -5 in Gaithersburg. There are many, many high schoolers in my neighborhood who have to walk a mile or more to get to school. Can you not see that the school delay is a sensible decision?

When MCPS doesn't allow childcare providers to operate, parents lose access to childcare they have already paid for and providers lose revenue from kids that drop in. MCPS should pay that money back since the decision is their fault. These decisions are a huge middle finger to working parents.

Sigh. It's called weather. MCPS has always closed for low temps, it's just that we don't have them every year, on a school day.

I am posting with years of experience as an MCPS parent. School districts in this area, including MCPS, generally err on the side of caution. Some districts are smaller and don't have buses or parking lots (DCPS) and can stay open. Some are large and deal with a ton of terrain and snow/ice variability (MCPS and FCPS) and need to close even when a good number of school properties are perfectly fine.

Now you know this! In five years, when we have the exact same scenario, there is a minuscule but non-negligible change you might even remember it!!!

And you'll be telling some other irate, dumbass parent who has kittens all over DCUM, exactly what I've told you.

In no universe is it sensible for MCPS to prohibit childcare providers from operating when no other employer in Montgomery County is telling employees to come in late.

She spent a million dollars on a bus notification app instead of more buses so that kids have to walk further in the cold. The goal should be a seat on the bus for every kid more than 1/3 of a mile from school.

Mcps has a lack of common sense. Someone needs to triage what's important and what's politics

O good lord. I see the teenagers walking to school in our neighborhood wearing just hoodie. They would be fine tomorrow. That said, bring on the 2 hr delay. Life is short. Let them sleep in once in awhile.

They really didn't require childcare providers to close/delay this often before covid. Then covid happened and MCPS lost its mind against working parents.

Should the money be a higher consideration, do you think?

This. We have gotten daily apology emails from our after-care providers about this.

MCPS is a disaster.

CUPF controls the use of school facilities outside of school hours so they decide things like if before care or aftercare is allowed. MCPS does not control this part. I am not sure if MCPS fully controls use of indoor facilities for their own MCPS run activities like athletics or theater. Does anyone know if this is up to CUPF or MCPS. Basically it helps to know how to complain to in order to complain successfully.

I do get the two hours delay during the morning cold emergency but the canceling of after school if that is up to MCPS makes much less sense.

The morning issue is more to do with our area not often being very cold like this so kids not having the correct gear coupled with extra bus delays due to temperatures. So basically not correctly garbed kids waiting outside for delayed buses is dangerous in these conditions. And kids walking to school without the correct garb is also dangerous. This impacts FARMS kids more since they are less likely to have access to car rides and also less access to appropriate very cold weather wear. Since Maryland declared a cold emergency my guess is MCPS is at high risk of being sued were something to happen and MCPS had not delayed. I think the two hour delay is a good call.

On the other hand, it makes no sense before care is closed since those kids are driven so no outdoor exposure. I think this is something to take up with CUPF. And I do not understand why indoor activities run by MCPS would be cancelled unless that is also a CUPF call.
