Impressive. Didn't realize NYU gave merit. Tough to get down to level of in state. COA still must be over $60k

PP is not being truthful as NYU offers very limited merit money:
https://www.nyu.edu/admissions/financial-aid-and-scholarships/applying-and-planning-for-undergraduate-aid/scholarships-and-grants.html

$30k is not an option.

+100. NYU does not give merit aid. Scholarships and FA sure, but not merit.

why are people like this?

look at CDS. they gave 143 no-need first years merit packages worth an average of over $40k

And how many freshman had no-need? Just curious, because 143 is not that much.

143 is a far greater number than the merit programs at BC or ND or Duke or USC .. and people here don't jump on here saying they don't "do" merit.

I do

IMO, they are not really giving merit unless at least 50%+ of students who do not get signifiant FA are getting merit. Duke handing out 25 Merit scholarships is "not giving merit aide" IMO. Every school has a small few scholarships awarded. But some, like most jesuit universities (outside the T30) give signifiant merit aide to almost everyone. That is "giving merit aid"

I think there are so few and restricted it's "safer" to assume nothing. 143 out of class of about 6,000 is like 2.5% looking at their website, scholarships are restricted to:
9/11 families, 1st gen, native American and NYC public.

Their scholarships are absolutely not restricted to those groups. Those are just some of the scholarships they offer. They also have presidential scholarships and artistic scholarships. Also, the CDS says that besides the 143, they awarded 226 first year freshman who had need non-need based scholarships. So they do have more merit than just the 143.

I have several kids and NYU was one of the most generous so please stop discouraging people from applying. The scholarships aren’t guaranteed but they do offer them.

Another school where one of my kids got good merit (academic) was Case, but that was a few years back.

Before we heard anything from Virginia Tech, we knew we had 3 viable alternatives within our budget (~$40k COA).

Are any of those school as good as Virginia Tech?

Subjectively: VT vs UNH was a tossup. MTU & UVM > VT

Objectively: the answer is no.

I feel like you need to re-read the link. These are very specific and limited scholarships available in limited quantities. NYU is expensive and gives virtually no merit aid.

UVM offered my OOS son a generous merit award package, which coupled with DC TAG, brought it to 30k including dorm and food plan for freshman year. Now he’s older and living off campus and paying for housing and food separately, and we pay 14K in tuition. Needs to maintain a 3.0.

U of Arizona gave almost full tuition scholarship to my OOS daughter. Needs to maintain 3.0. I believe they are no longer as generous with new students as they are having financial issues.

VT is ranked higher than all those schools.
