Depends on the school…? Some schools will just have loads of APs, not really a bad model and those schools tend to have teachers doing post-AP content in the AP courses. Others like IMSA, offer robust post Math APs, but really most magnet schools don’t have much content beyond Linear Algebra/MVC. |
If it is crazy for your kid, don't do it. If your kid is overwhelmed by their schedule, do something about it. My kids are not overwhelmed by AP courses. They are choosing the classes that interest them most. |
Newsweek hasn’t done rankings in years. I don’t understand why you don’t just name the school…nobody else has a problem saying their kid goes to TJ or Blair Magnet or Sidwell or wherever. |
How is it that TJ and I think Blair are such exceptional Magnet schools? Even some of our local comprehensive public’s offer Linear Algebra and MVC. |
Thank you. This is an insightful comment many of us on here need to heed. |
Students at most magnets have to work harder in a wider map of courses typically? They also dominate competitions and other competitive activities, because the students are just better. It’s cool that 5 kids at the local school can take dual credit linear algebra, but to have a high volume of those students and get them to all excel is impressive. |
Not from DC and don’t really need to put my information out there? Great that people are willing to say Sidwell, good for those parents. For you, it’s DC’s high school. Does it pain you that much to evaluate past knowing the name? |
Yeah. Thats an odd statement. Quite a number of schools accept 4s for credit and some take 3s depending on the class. |
I tend to agree with you. However, my kid managed 8 APs, 4 each junior and senior year. However, they stuck to mostly STEM APs that were the next logical path for the advanced math and science kid. Took 8th grade took regular biology and Geometry, 9th took regular Chem and Algebra2 (we don't have Honors courses). 10th was precalc and regular Physics. So when 11th came, the next logical path was AP Chem and Calc AB. They also took AP Psych and AP Comp Sci A. For them it was easy and not too time consuming. However they didn't want to do APUSH and AP Eng as those would cut into their 15-20 hours/week for their year round competitive sport. And the AP FL teacher sucked so my kid stopped after Spanish 3 (they'd had them for Spanish 2 and teacher couldn't teach their way out of a box on fire if needed to). Senior year was AP Physics C Mech and Calc BC and AP Statistics and for final "elective" AP CompSci Principals. Kid was in band all 4 years as well. But these APs did not take up more time for my kids and were naturally the next course in their academic progression. They smartly chose not to overwhelm themselves with AP humanities that would be time consuming---sure they could have but then they would only get 3-4 hours of sleep each night. |
It’s not Dual Credit…it’s taught at the school to classes of 20+ kids. However, you didn’t answer why TJ is I guess so much more comprehensive than other magnet schools. I guess we are spoiled in this area. |
DC doesn’t have that competitive of a scene. New York, LA, and the Texas cities (specifically Dallas and Houston) are much more competitive with better schools. In each of those places, magnet schools are the top schools next to privates. It’s to do with the amount of highly intelligent students concentrated in one place. |
I don’t even know what that means…but TJ does offer robust post-AP classes in Math and STEM. You still aren’t answering why they don’t offer the breadth and depth of a TJ. |
TJ is only one magnet school. You’re asking why every stem college isn’t exactly like MIT. I don’t know that’s their decision. If you’re interested look at IMSA, SEM, Debakey Science, and Whitney Young’s webpages. They can answer more than me |
Following one of your suggestions, they clearly offer post-AP math: https://www.dallasisd.org/Page/89866 |
Looks like just one post-AP math class. Hey, this is DCUM…again I guess we should be really thankful for Blair and TJ…I thought it was the same experience at all these top Magnets. It’s not I guess. |
