My kids are working hard to make varsity in their respective sports. It feels like an insult when some kid can take up pickleball and put down they play on a varsity sport on their college application. It’s not the same thing as years of intense playing, injuries and tryouts. What a joke.

What if they do both equally well? #winning
Maybe your kids should concentrate on putting academic subjects like multivariable calculus, chemistry and Spanish on their applications to academic institutions, rather than relying on leisure activities for admissions. That's the real insult - that sports even count for college admissions.

Well, they go to university to study math and chemistry becaue that's what universities are for, and they can do volleyball or whatever with a club.

He also plays PB seriously. According to my DS, it took him exactly three weeks to become a 5.5+ PB player. Most PB players told him that, as a UTR 11.5 tennis player, he would become a 5.5+ PB player after three to three weeks of training. He also said that he likes PB because it is a very social and lots of girls play PB. An easy way to meet women.

I thought he was a 10.8

Think she meant 10.5 but who’s counting

In tennis, if you lose in the first round of the US Open, you get paid $75,000. In PB, if you win the whole tournament, you get paid $2,000, LOL....

WTF?

Where do you live? There is a group that plays pickleball on the courts near my house in Silver Spring and there are quite a few Black players that come regularly.

It says PB will be a corollary sport open to both kids with disabilities and without, as it’s listed as a more inclusive sport Does this mean that kids with disabilities who want to play a varsity sport will have first chance at making a team or is it going to be 250 kids trying out for the team with lots of cuts?

You do realize that only like 30 tennis players are above break-even, and the top 10 players take 99% of all money available...which BTW the real money is in sponsorships, not tournament fees.

However, here are some facts from 2023...which certainly averages out to higher than $2,000 for winning the entire tournament:

The highest-earning pickleball player won $125,000 in prize money during the first three events of 2023, a tour spokesperson told CBS MoneyWatch.

The professional circuit has only existed for like 2 years.

Anything that gets kids to put down their phones sounds like a good idea.

I give bonus points for sports they can do for many years as well eg swimming, pickle ball and running.

Wouldn't be nice if kids could play sports for fun and fitness and not be subjected to cuts.

The same way tennis, squash, table tennis and badminton are sports. What's your definition?
