If you look at the calendar and surrounding holidays, some of these dates are a complete joke. Like the whole week is a waste several times for our assigned dates.

Is that posted somewhere? Of course I have one kid at a center and one kid at our local elementary and they're in different pyramids (Lake Braddock and Robinson) so they won't even be off early the same Monday???

Why are they 2 different sets of dates?

They were never half days. They were 2 hour early release days on Mondays.

True. Students were in school for about 4.5+ hours. A half day would only be 3 hours and 20 min.

I suspect it’s lead by a fixed number of people (probably from Gatehouse) who can’t be at 100 schools on the same day/time.

Or perhaps a fixed number of trainers from for-profit curriculum companies that get more money for providing endless training to teachers who could be teaching instead?

They got rid of the old early release Mondays at parents' request but it did not help children or learning. They need to bring it back so that elementary school teachers would have proper planning time and less stress and overwork. That's what the administration should do if they care about kids actually learning.

Even better, bring back all-day teacher work days every Monday like they had during Covid. It was so much easier to get things done.

If they had said it was for planning time, it would make more sense. If they gave teachers more resources so that they weren't always scrambling for youtube videos and downloaded worksheets, that would also make sense. But saying it's because these professional teachers need more professional development - that is a farce.

I was just replying to the PP who said they should bring back early release Mondays so that teachers could have more planning time. I just wanted to give a little historical info about when it ended.

The state is requiring this professional development and they have to find somewhere to put it.

This is a great idea! And year-long school to make up for the extra days!

The state of VA is requiring a ton of PD. This has nothing to do with unions. Every district will need to make a plan to give their teachers time to complete this REQUIRED training.

All of this Professional Development for teachers is a farce. Why do teachers need so much more training than say, lawyers or doctors? What is it that they are learning to do when teaching elementary school children the **same things** year after year?

Do you follow your doctor’s schedule so closely that you know how professional development he does?

I live in McLean! All my friends and neighbors are doctors and lawyers ...

Principals and teachers have been working on the proposal. It’s a process that takes time.

Gatehouse official has entered the chat, I see.

Or maybe an actual principal who knows a little more than you has entered the chat and is grateful that there’s some acknowledgment of the time it’s going to take to meet the state’s requirement to train teachers on the new reading basal. If you have some ideas about how to find hours of training time for teachers, please share. My colleagues and I would love to hear them.

How hard is it to teach reading? As long as you don't teach kids to guess what the word the picture is meant to represent, then it seems straightforward enough? C-A-T

If only. (ES Teacher)
Maybe you could work with Younkin to simplify the training since you seem to have a handle on it.

bus runs. Reid mentioned this in the email (vaguely).

Teacher also. Won’t this just cause more problems with subs. It was intended that families with childcare issues can stay but now anyone can stay and then what? Whole classes need people watching them with no teaching going on? I just don’t see how this is supposed to work.
