how many hours sleep does your child in MS get on school days?

However all electronics automatically get shut off at 10pm, excluding the Kindle paperwhite. I presume my kid is asleep by 11pm. He wakes at 730. I don’t think it’s enough because I have to wake him every morning and it’s hard. I think he needs 10hrs, but i cannot force him to sleep at 930.

It doesn’t work for my 14 year old, who isn’t a middle schooler btw, but a high schooler, to have a 10pm shut off time as he needs access to his computer for homework. Unfortunately some times he has enough homework that he’s working on it past midnight. Since starting high school he’s been perpetually tired (he leaves for school at 6:35am). The homework load is extremely intense and it’s not a question of time management - he’s very good with it and very self motivated to get things done. I realized that I need to just leave it to him - he is responsible for completing his school work and he’s responsible for getting enough sleep. I can’t micromanage it at this age and keeping up with school work is too important.

I hope I don't come across a judgy when I say something is amiss here. My DD has a decent hw load in high school (at a private school with a reputation as a pressure cooker), and she still gets a healthy amount of sleep every night. If she were up late doing hw all the time and constantly tired, I would definitely re-evaluate and do something to remedy the situation. The fact that your son is perpetually tired is a red flag. It would not be "micromanaging" to do something about it.

Please name your high school if there is a reasonable amount of homework or your kid is not staying up past midnight. I’m talking about regular classes, not AP.

It's not about the high school, it's about the right fit between the high school and the kid. And also not letting your kid sign up for 1 million AP classes combined with 1 million activities!

Probably also kid dependent. My SIL has two kids that both went to the same HS with the same teachers, and took very similar courseload. They also had the same high commitment EC. The older one used to be up until 2:00 AM doing homework and studying for tests. The younger one would come home and nap, and go to bed at 10:00 PM. The older one graduated with a GPA of 4.66 (out of 4.75), and the younger one with 4.58.

Their school was undoubtedly tough, but the younger one said that if he listened in class, that was sufficient. That's just not how the older one worked.

9-10 hours per night. I have a 6th and an 8th grader. 6th grader goes to sleep between 9 and 945. 8th grader goes between 9:30 and 10:30. Both get up between 7 and 7:30. Leave for school at 8.

I have seen texts come in after 10pm so I see that she's correct about at least some of them. I don't get why since they have to be up by 6:30am latest to get to MS on time. Are parents just not prioritizing sleep?
No normal 13 year old has a bedtime that early, My 11 year old gets up at 7:00am and doesn't go to bed until 10:00-10:30.

It's almost still daylight at 9pm, That's way too early for a kid that age.

No, it’s not - especially when child is up before 6 AM.

This. Honestly, the idea of a "bedtime" for a teenager is odd to me. Mine has to get up a bit before 6am and gets to sleep when he can after activities and homework and, yes, sometimes just wasting time if he has caught up on sleep over the weekend.

It is. I tell my 14 yo good night when I go to bed and then assume he goes to sleep at some point. If not, oh well, he’ll be tired the next day. He’s usually asleep between 9:30 and 10 from what he tells me but he really doesn’t have a “bedtime”.

how can you feel good about this? bc he's 14 he no longer needs parenting? ugh, this is what's wrong with this generation -- shitty parents.

Lady you really need to calm down. Not everyone needs as much sleep as you think they do. My kid has practice or games until 10 some nights. They are almost never asleep at 10, so an extra 45 minutes or so is really not a big deal.

Older DD is in 10th grade all honors with 2 APs. Hardly any HW at home ever. Finishes it at the end of the long class block or does it during study hall. Straight As. LCPS.

It was the same when she was in MS, and my current MS also rarely has HW.

Per the CDC, the majority of teens (and adults) are not getting enough sleep. Teenagers need a minimum of 8 hours of sleep. 10pm to 6pm works if they are able to actually fall asleep at 10pm, but more than likely, they have been on their phones, and it will take them a good while to fall asleep.

I'm a PP who stated that my teens have told me that a lot of kids in 1st and 2nd period are still half asleep.

"normal" means your kid isn't getting enough sleep per the CDC and AAP.

Well, we all know how credible the CDC is . . .

we are doing all of our kids a disservice with school starting so early during years they truly need the sleep
