| DEXA scans are far better than BMI as a measurement. They are available at Bodymass Gym in Arlington. They measure bone density and lean muscle mass. That's what is really important. You can be normal weight and unhealthy, hence the term "skinny fat." |
Oh can it with the skinny fat. This is just something made up by fat people to help them feel better about themselves. |

It makes me sad to see so many parents here refusing to own up to their own failure.
Big boned, muscular, strong, eats veggies, genetics, dad is the same... bla, bla, bla. It's not the kids, it's YOU. |
You do realize there are lots of different, normal, healthy body types, right? |
|
How fat you are allowed to get before 18 impacts health and weight struggles for a lifetime.

None that are overweight are healthy. You are endangering your child by refusing to do your duty. Shameful. And no, I don't understand that there are any overweight bodies that are healthy. How nice that for your sake, evolution has somehow managed to produce obese kids in less that 30 years' time, when prior to that there were very few "Different, normal and healthy body types" for kids. Your kids eat the food you provide, do better. |

My mother in law was born during WW2 in Europe, was somewhat malnourished as a child and lived in Europe until her mid-20s. She was already overweight despite eating minimally-processed and small quantities of healthy foods. She has a number of friends her age who are also "overweight" who are also healthy older adults. Despite her weight she has lived for 80 years in full health, she was an athletic person and still walks several miles outdoors every day. So yes, I believe that there are a variety of healthy bodies.
So yes, there are plenty of different types of bodies and many of them can be healthy. And you're assuming that all bodies process foods in the same ways - this is simply not true. A family with multiple members can all eat the same food, even in the same quantities and end up varying sizes. |

This book is a good read/listen, the author, Dr. Ben Bikman is also pretty active on IG and Twitter and he does lots of podcasts. https://www.amazon.com/Why-We-Get-Sick-Epidemic/
His research focuses on insulin resistance/metabolic syndrome, caused by a diet too high in sugar and starches or too frequent eating or both. IR is a driver of PCOS in women and ED in men, of mood and anxiety disorders, of diabetes, NAFLD, heart disease, some cancers and ultimately, Alzheimer's. What we eat, how much and how often, along with how much lean mass (muscle) we have determines so much re: health and quality of life at all ages. The book has many actionable ideas for all ages. Bikman has several children of his own. Healthy eating (including appropriate quantities), quality sleep and an active lifestyle should be for the whole family. |
Bla, bla, bla. |
That is fascinating |
Dp. Isn’t this like saying my kid is dyslexic so I’m not going to try to teach them how to read because they will feel oppressed? we know that childhood obesity will cause op’s child lifelong health problems, not to mention social stigma. With no other issue, learning disability or diabetes or whatever, regardless of her predisposition, would we just throw our hands up and say there’s nothing that can/should be done. I understand there’s a risk of developing eating disorder but the consequences of doing nothing to change her bmi are much higher. |
1. No. and 2. That sentence is larded with assumptions that are not founded in evidence and asserts a conclusion that is accordingly without merit. |
I don’t think she will be obese once she hits her growth spurt and gets some height but her trajectory seems to show that she will be larger framed and just “bigger” and more solid. That is ok, OP just has to help her have a healthy mindset about that because it’s harder as a girl with our beauty standards to exist in a larger body. |

OP, focus on a high protein animal based breakfast, it really sets up the rest of the day for hunger control. Ditch the oats, sugary smoothies and syrup.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4334852 My kids really like these, I do as egg muffins or put in an 8x8 pan and cut into squares. Can easily reheat in mw covered in damp paper towel, can vary the cheese, meats, etc. If out, Starbucks has something similar. https://www.dietdoctor.com/recipes/keto-egg-muffins |
Did you mis type something? her BMI is 21, which is the low side of normal. |
