If you don’t use housekeeping do you still tip?

+1. Restaurant workers share tips. Why should some hotel workers like bellhops and valets (mostly male) get generous tips and housekeepers (mostly female) get nothing?

I get so annoyed when I'm paying the cab fare and the bellhop gets to the bags before I do. I 100% do not need him to carry my bags 25 feet but then I have to tip him

Haha I was recently accosted like that was too tired to fight him after a long flight
But also, maybe switch to Uber where you don’t have to pay the fare before you get out?

What about the people who clean your office building at night? Or the cooks at McDonald's? Do you tip the usher at the theater/arena? Do you tip the desk clerk at the motel? Or the security guard at the parking garage? Do you leave a tip for the cleaners when you stay in a VRBO?

If you think it is disgusting that people do not tip hotel housekeepers because they "are working their asses off," then you need to up your tipping game too.

I just checked out of a hotel. It was the same woman doing the housekeeping everyday, even on Sunday. She was on my floor when I left my room so I just handed her $20 for a 4 night stay and thanked her.

She was surprised and then so pleased she was appreciated in this way, kept saying thank you over and over again.

But I did not tip the fellow who opened the door for me on the way out.

For us it's often bc of a timing mismatch - like would have been happy to have the room cleaned in the AM when we were out, but when they came in the afternoon baby was sleeping so we put the DND on the door, etc.

One time in India I left a note about how I loved the towel animal from housekeeping. Each day of my trip he left me a bigger and better one. It was great fun to come back to after a long day at work.
If they provide drinks I want them to come in and bring me more water, or whatever the amenity is.

Am I obligated to tip, no? But I think it is a nice gesture and I feel it gets me excellent service. I am not saying everyone doesn't get great service but when you go out of your way for them, they will go out of their way for you. On my last work trip it seemed my colleague and I got different amenity kits. Mine was always a bit nicer. She still got what she was entitled to, but I got just a bit more. It is not the primary reason I do it, but its good karma coming back to me. If I didn't use house keeping I would tip once on the last day.

None of these people touch towels I wipe my privates with or empty garbage with my dental floss in it. As for tipping those people you mention, if it is reasonable I do. Amazon had this thing were you could thank a driver over Alexa and they would give them $5 or $10 dollars. PTAs recognizes the school janitors so my donations do in fact tip them. In NYC, where I grew up, delivery drivers and doorman regularly get holiday tips from residents. Many NYT building staff rake it in over the holidays. I have a family member who gets several grand in tips each year.

And it is weird to say b/c I don't tip for X I also don't tip for Y.
