Living in an expensive neighborhood is unexpectedly expensive

I’m an electrical contractor and I admit I charge more in the expensive zip codes. All the contractors do. And those customers pay it because I do exceptional work based on customer feedback. You want a shoddy job then go with the cheaper electrician. Not sure what to tell you, I have a family to feed. Same reason some lawyers charge $300/hr and other $1000/hr.

I used to have a train station car beat up Ford Taurus and a nice BMW for weekends.

Even stuff like getting estimate to clean a rug a fix a vacuum I get cheaper estimates if I pulled up in the old car.

How could you possibly get a quote for any of those things in such a way that they would watch you pull up?

I don't think it's ripping someone off if I give the nonprofit that feeds homeless people a steep discount, and then don't give any discount to the notorious DC lawyer who is famous for helping people rip other people off. As I said, I'm not adding anything to the listed price; I'm just not giving any discount or incentive. Also, if you had ever worked at rich people homes, you would know that it totally sucks and is actually worth more money. So if it takes me 20 minutes to get through your security gates and down your private road, only to be treated dismissively and have my time disrespected, you better believe you are paying retail.

I’ve noticed this too. I live in Falls Church City (Broadmont neighborhood) and will try to get ballpark estimates on the phone now when possible by saying I live “near Seven Corners.” Technically true. It doesn’t work for every project but it works for things like a cleaning price (I gave the rooms/square footage) or hourly rate for a handyman.
