| I really enjoyed James McBride's books Deacon King Kong and The Good Lord Bird. |
This is an unpopular opinion, but I didn’t like Somebody’s Daughter. It was a decent book, but it got so much buzz that seemed very unwarranted. “I kept forgetting to breathe while I was reading it.” “People will be talking about this book forever.” I didn’t get that at all from this book. I really like the author and have followed her on social media for many years, but this book was pretty “meh” for me. Her publisher did a really good job selling the book, but to me the hype was unwarranted. It’s a pretty short book and took me a really long time to finish it. Most people love it, and I’m happy it did well because I like the author and empathize with her story. But this is not one I would recommend. |
| The steven carter mystery thriller series was really good too and partially based in DC so fun from that angle |
| Richard Wright - both Black Boy and Native Son |
Yeah, definitely not too uptight to berate people providing you recommendations. You want to dock points off my homework assignment, go right ahead. |
Except they didn't, did they? They didn't recommend a single title. |
NP. I see 6 pages of excellent suggestions! Surely you can find something. My favorite is Native Son. Also like Down These Mean Streets (something different - about a black Puerto Rican growing up in NYC in the ‘30s), Autobiography of Malcolm X. |
+1 !! |
| I just finished the book of short stories The Secret Lives of Church Ladies by Deesha Philyaw. I loved it. So much nuance and feeling connected to characters in a few short pages. I listened to it on audiobook, but it’s one I wish I had read as a true book. |
