Somebody's Daughter by Ashely Ford

Both are debut memoir's, and have some similarities, but are wonderful stories. The Ugly Cry had be laughing and crying and just IN MY FEELS at so many points.

This is an unpopular opinion, but I didn’t like Somebody’s Daughter. It was a decent book, but it got so much buzz that seemed very unwarranted. “I kept forgetting to breathe while I was reading it.” “People will be talking about this book forever.” I didn’t get that at all from this book. I really like the author and have followed her on social media for many years, but this book was pretty “meh” for me. Her publisher did a really good job selling the book, but to me the hype was unwarranted. It’s a pretty short book and took me a really long time to finish it. Most people love it, and I’m happy it did well because I like the author and empathize with her story. But this is not one I would recommend.

I like Edward P. Jones, Zadie Smith, Jesmyn Ward, Danielle Evans, Walter Mosley, Ralph Ellison, Chester Himes, Tayari Jones, Attica Locke, Colson Whitehead, Percival Everrett and probably more but that's all I can think of now.

Which books though?
I only know Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, did he write anything else you can recommend?

Which books? All of them.

Not to be too uptight here, but the title of this thread is "BEST BOOKS by Black Authors" so I'm quite specifically looking for titles, not just author names. Thanks. I can run a search on names just like anyone else.

Yeah, definitely not too uptight to berate people providing you recommendations. You want to dock points off my homework assignment, go right ahead.

Except they didn't, did they? They didn't recommend a single title.

NP. I see 6 pages of excellent suggestions! Surely you can find something. My favorite is Native Son. Also like Down These Mean Streets (something different - about a black Puerto Rican growing up in NYC in the ‘30s), Autobiography of Malcolm X.

I just finished the book of short stories The Secret Lives of Church Ladies by Deesha Philyaw. I loved it. So much nuance and feeling connected to characters in a few short pages. I listened to it on audiobook, but it’s one I wish I had read as a true book.

Recently I loved The Office of Historical Corrections by Danielle Evans. But my all time favorite book is Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin.

This is my list of favorites (some of whom are AA) I would love some new suggestions (some of these are very old). Thank you

Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison
The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison
Beloved by Toni Morrison
I know why the cage bird sings by Maya Angelou
The color Purple by Alice Walker
Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe
The Hate You give by Angie Thomas
The Long Song by Andrea Levy

So what is the point then? What is "Black"? I am African American--different culture than one who is from say Kenya or Nigeria. What do we have in common?
