Where should my family of 5 live if I work in DUMBO

Anonymous
Considering a move from DC. I have 3 young kids and a dog so ideally will have a 4+ bedroom house with a yard. We can afford a maximum of $3m - prefer less obviously. Want to minimize commute to extent possible, live in a place that’s great for families, and has a nice sense of community. How far out will I have to go to get this space in this price range and where should I look? Thank you!

Brooklyn Heights, Park Slope etc.

I checked park slope on Zillow and could only find 2 or 3 bedroom places in that price range. Do you think Zillow is off?

I see a lot of four-bedroom homes in Brooklyn for under $2 million. Maybe you could buy in a not-so-great school zone in Brooklyn and send your children to a private school?

Ugh. Why would you move to nyc. Such a lifestyle downgrade for a big family. 3m here gets you the sun, moon, stars. I would rethink.

No, just no. Only live in Staten Island if you also work there or maybe Bay Ridge.

No nyc is expensive. Check Long Island and see what you think of the commute.

It’s for a dream job - id love to make it work but right now am not seeing a way without either 1) losing my family time to a long commute or 2) squishing into a small place that would likely be a tough transition for a family not used to it. I was hoping people here knew of some sweet spot to look!

Bay Ridge, Prospect Park, Carroll Gardens, Williamsburg, Lower East Side.

Unfortunately there really aren’t any neighborhoods that will get you both of those things. Maybe you could find a unicorn somewhere, but there aren’t any neighborhoods within an easy commute of there where you’re going to find a 4 bedroom house with a yard, especially since by “yard” I assume you mean actual grass space your kids can run around, not just a patio out back that you can put some planters on.

If you really want the job, I would start looking for houses out in Nassau County and accept the commute.

Long Island is just the worst.....stay in Brooklyn. Look at Gowanus, Red Hook or even Bed-Stuy for a more affordable brownstone.

If they move to St. George neighborhood, they could take the SI ferry to Manhattan then catch the other ferry from south sea port to dumbo. An all ferry commute!

What is a reasonable commute to you?

Honestly, I would be looking at neighborhood communities in NJ that are on a train line. It's really not hard to commute by train.
