false sono

Anonymous
So our 20 week sono told us we were having a boy. And now we went for a sono at 36 weeks and they say that it is a girl..

WTH?? Has this happened to anyone else?

I was under the impression that you can be told falsely that it is a girl and it ends up being a boy (rare but can happen)
but never the other way round!

I *think* it is only with the amnio or CVS that if they determine it's a boy, then it is a boy 100%, with the idea that you would not have boy genes in you, but with a girl diagnosis, it is (rare but) possible that they sampled your genes, and not your baby's, thus determining you are having a girl.

I think with US the doctor can be fairly certain (I'm sure upwards of 90% of the time) of the sex but not always. I have heard of wrong diagnosis before, particularly if you don't get many sonograms throughout the pregnancy.

Hope you're not disappointed. We are expecting our first girl next week!

oh sister..literally!! I had the same experience and I will be honest...I was devastated and so upset that I was in bed for a week. Not to mention all the boy things that I bought that had to go back. My husband was actually great and told me that I should be grateful for a healthy child, but I was focused on seeing a little version of him and participing in little league and other boy things---completely ignoring that little girls can do the same things. But..there is a light in the end of this tunnel!! I wound up falling head over heals for this little sweet girl and much to my surprise I am now so into dolls and dresses and god forbid..pink!!!!! I really think that what you get you are meant to get...god wanted me to have this little girl and you will not only be thrilled but I promise you that fast forward a year from now you are going to be saying that you can't imagine any other child than the one you have!!!

I've heard of a couple of cases. The worst was my husband's cousin, who was so upset he had flowers he'd ordered delivered to another room.

Astonishingly, he and his wife are still married.

It didn't take him long to come around, though. She's definitely Daddy' girl.

- told it's a boy, but happy either way.

Wow, what a surprise. OP, when you saw the original sono, could you see the bits n pieces? I'm due this summer with a boy, and I can't imagine the sono being wrong because, well, we saw the twig and the berries. But if you did, maybe this could happen to us too!

This sort of happened to me. I was told at my 20 week scan it was a girl, but then I had another scan at around 34 weeks or so for other reasons, and that tech said, no, it was a boy. I think girl to boy is a lot more common, either you see little boy parts or you don't, but saying it is a girl, you could just "miss" the parts. It's hard to make a call, I think, then there's an absence -- either it's not there or you missed it, know what I mean?

If you're really freaked out, ask your OB for another scan. Also to a PP whose friend's DH redeivered flowers -- OMG, I am so, so surprised they are still married!

This happened to my friend's sister, but in her case they did not find out until the delivery room! I'm sure it is a shock, but the most important thing is that the baby is healthy.

WOW! That is quite a shock! We were told at 21 weeks that it was a little girl. I asked the tech (an older, brisk woman) if she was "sure" and could I start buying pink clothes and she replied, "I do not guess. If I can't tell for sure, then I say that I can't tell." She was "spread eagle" in the sonogram - if she is a boy, I'm a little concerned about where the "parts" are!!

I am due in 2 weeks and will be quite surprised if baby comes out a boy - not that I would be upset, but I've spent the last 17 weeks picturing her as a girl. Not to mention he'd be wearing a lot of pink until we got around to shopping for boy clothes and blankets!

OP, at each sono did they point out what they were basing their answer on? I've had friends who've had boys and I agree that its hard to mistake that penis for anything else!

A friend of a friend got the wrong info with an AMNIO. Turns out her results were mixed up with someone else's. Fortunately, there were no medical issues, but can you imagine?
