Ugh - horizon milk drank after expiration date...

Anonymous
On vacation so I picked up some little chocolate horizon milk cartons - my daughter drank about half and my husband emptied the rest in the sink and noticed a bunch of chunks st the bottom - checked the expiration date and realized it was 3 months expired! I feel terrible for not checking but my bigger concern is if she is going to get sick from drinking it! I know we can’t do anything about it but just trying to plan ahead because we have a 6 hour drive later today

OP, chances are that nothing will happen. I have (accidentally) given DC expired horizon's milk. The chunks at the bottom are normal. Do you have any cartons left? If so, you can try one to see if it's spoiled.

They are almost certainly fine if they were in those sealed cartons. They are intended to be shelf-stable. If the milk was spoiled, it would have smelled.

No, husband emptied them all once he realized they were expired since it was trash day at this house. Fingers crossed nothing happens!!

Breathe, OP! I bet it's ok. Those cartons are meant to last way past the expiration date.

Milk that's gone bad will probably smell and taste bad, even to a kid. If she drank it happily, it's probably fine.

That happened to me with shelf stable horizon whole milk still one month out from expiration. Tasted fine but looked like it was no longer homogenized. I got a refund from Horizon.

Ugh, this happened to us once though the milk was OVER A YEAR EXPIRED! I bought it as a sinlge from the grocery store. I still gag a little when i think of it.

Kids drank about a third, between the two of them, complained it tasted funny.

Nothing else happened except being totally grossed out.

And I went ack to that grocery store and complained. And they gave me $1.25 back, though what I wanted was for them to go check the shelves!

The same thing happened to me recently with a Horizon vanilla milk box. We had purchased individual ones near the checkout at the grocery store. I stuck the straw in and handed it to my 4 year old and she complained that nothing would come up the straw. I started looking at it and noticed it expired back in January. The milk inside was completely solid. It was disgusting but I was glad she couldn't get anything up the straw.

Op here - so far all is okay, phew! And for the one concerned I am feeding my child chocolate milk - I think she will be okay with a little sugar since 90% of her diet is healthy! It was supposed to be a vacation treat but guess that won’t be happening now

Honestly, if it was spoiled enough to make your child sick, it would have tasted/smelled bad enough that the kid would not drink it.

Usually rotten milk just tastes gross. It doesn’t make you sick.

This. Spoiling milk is basically part of the process of making yogurt, btw. You will be fine

Cheese is made from spoiled milk, so I doubt it would hurt her.
