WH announces construction of 90,000 sq foot ballroom to WH

I still don't understand how this is legal. Donald Trump does not own the White House, which is a National Historic Landmark. How does a temporary tenant have the authority to destroy this historic structure? And replace it with a 90,000 square foot ballroom for god's sake. I would think every American would agree this is an abomination. This is a man destroying America's historical landmarks on a whim.

I'm not even going to get into the whole if Obama had done it, Republicans would... It is absolutely nuts that this is what the GOP has become. There is absolutely nothing conservative about Republicans today. Republicans remind me of the Red Guards in Maoist China. Extremely dangerous and profoundly un-American.

I was thinking that too, might just replace it piece by piece

Normally, changes to the White House have to go through the National Capital Planning Commission, a 12-member board that has a majority of Trump allies on it, including Trump Staff Secretary Will Scharf. They are treating the demolition phase as something that is not their concern because they apparently only deal with construction. As to the construction phase, the White House said “it would soon send ballroom plans to the National Capital Planning Commission, which is required to review any external construction project at the White House and will decide whether to approve the new building.” I think it is safe to assume that they will rubberstamp it.

This, and the fact that Trump doesn’t care about norms, is why he can get away with it.

It's not. Just about everything he's doing is illegal.

Wait for a few weeks when they say the White House is now structurally unsound, so the entire thing needs to come down. Or, they bulldoze it and then tell us.

It’s sickening to look at. Donald Trump managed to accomplish what Flight 93 couldn’t.

first of all, how are more people not upset about this? My aunt from South Dakota did not even know it was happening. Secondly, how can they destroy historic properties where all those people who didn’t want the confederate statues torn down because of history.

A two bit developer. I can see why he went out of business. Off the cuff, he raised the price of the ballroom to $350 million today. It changed from $200 million, then $300 million, now $350 million within the course of a few days.

Some day, MAGA will admit how deceitful this guy is, but today is not that day.

It isn't legal. We live in an authoritarian and lawless (for the 1%) state.

So much disrespect and disregard towards future First Ladies! The East Wing was their area. Now what?

Super curious as to what will be the thing that finally pulls the curtain away for MAGA.
