Is getting a sandbox worth it?

Anyone's kids play with a sandbox? Debating getting one and a water table for the patio for the summer. Kids are 1.5 and 3YO this summer and love the little plastic pool but just trying to think of some other fun stuff to add outside.

If you have the space, yes it's worth it. Endless fun!

Yes - you will get about 5 years of fun out of a sandbox with kids that age if you put the right toys in.

Our back yard was/is a home for lots of mosquitos. Our sandbox was loved but under used because of the bites at younger ages like 18 months.

The next year we joined our neighborhood pool and they had a sandy area that ended up replacing the sandbox.

When the kids were 6 and 8, we built a screened in porch and during the construction we intended to get rid of the sandbox.

Somehow the sandbox ended up in the screened in porch because we couldn't find the right outdoor furniture at the time we needed it.

The sandbox got 2 or 3 more summers of use bug free.

My now 7 and 9 year old still "play" in the sandbox we bought 8 years ago. Obviously, they play with it differently now than when they were littler. I ask each year if they're ready to pass it on and they say no.

Yes.
We got DD the turtle one when she was 2 and she is almost 6 now and still plays with sand. Last summer we added a plastic storage container ( the under the bed style) of sand and put it on a bench on the deck so its at waist height for her. She plays with this one too.

NP here. I was wondering the same. For those, who like it, how do you deal with animals "using" your sand box?

You have to cover it when not in use. We use a tarp with large stones to hold it down.

We have a plastic one that can also be used as a water table. Our DDs (3 and 5) love it. Of course, most of the sand ends up migrating outside the sandbox over time, so we need to buy another 50lb bag of sand every year to fill it up again.

If you don’t have your yard sprayed for mosquitos, how do you deal with that?

I am wondering the same! PPs who have a sandbox, where did you get the sand for it? I wanted to get one for my kid but it seems like its hard to find good sand that isn't super fine or that doesn't contain toxic stuff..
