NATIONAL CHILDREN'S CHORUS

Anonymous
Hello!

Does anyone have experience with the demands, both financially and time-wise, of being part of the National Children's Chorus? My DC is interested in auditioning and I would like to hear from parents who have first-hand knowledge.

Also, how high are the standards for acceptance?

Thanks very much!

My child is in Children's Chorus of Washington, and when we looked at both the costs and time commitment were similar. Think it works out to roughly $175/month during the school year, with rehearsals once a week for about 2 hours. This is for the entry-level audition chorus. My NCC info is a few years out of date.

For CCW, you need to audition with the director. Includes things like singing a simple song like Happy Birthday, pitch matching, matching rhythm, sing in a round and hold your own part, and similar. I think this is the same with NCC. Auditions for higher level choruses in these groups will be more involved.

Would love if there could be an update to this post. We are currently members of NCC and comm wondering if CCW could be a better fit. Curious about other people’s experiences!

I also have questions about NCC. My DC is being asked to audition and I don’t know how selective it is vs whether this is kind of a vanity program?

The National Children’s Chorus has two divisions and several levels within those divisions. My NCC review is on YELP. There is room for all levels of singers in the NCC. Dr. Alan Laino heard my chilld’s audition, he is great. My daughter was a member of the ACDA Children’s National Honor Choir, an auditioned honor choir with singers from all 50 states, SWACDA seven state honor choir, and three All-State level choirs. We auditioned globally as we did not live in a chapter city. My daughter was accepted into the Scholars. She sang concerts in Los Angeles, Washington, D.C. and New York with the NCC Scholars, and we toured England and she helped record “Illumine” at Abbey Road Studios. It was the most wonderful year.

Thank you for this. My son was just accepted into the Scholars. Could you tell me more about it? The “pitch” makes them seem rather commercially driven, I can’t tell whether this is the elite choir it makes itself out to be or whether it’s just aggressive marketing? How selective is it really?

Just wondering how the National Children’s Chorus compares to the Strathmore Youth Choir? Is one better regarded than the other or are they similar?

I don’t think anyone outside of DC has heard of the Strathmore youth choir
