Planning a trips for the family to Porto portugal as our starting point. Not really sure how much to plan budget wise for taxi cabs, restaurants and activities? Any advice you could share? Going for two weeks. How much to plan per person?

We flew from Dulles through Newark to Lisbon, and took the train to Porto the same day (we did not pre-book the train, we just took the next one after we arrived at the station). Flights to Lisbon were much cheaper than Porto.

The great thing about Porto is that it is very walkable. We stayed on the Ribiera and pretty much walked everywhere, or took public transportation. We didn't use cabs in Porto. We only used a cab twice in Lisbon - public transportation is excellent in both cities.

Restaurant prices just depends on where you go - like anywhere...

Are you going with kids? We didn't take our kids - so we went to a lot of the port houses on the other side of the river, went out for nice dinners, and did some sightseeing like the train station, casa de musica, livraria lello (kids would LOVE all of those, by the way). And drank more port. Lots of port. We also did a river cruise which was fun, and next time we're going to take a trip up to the valley for wine tasting.

Hope that helps!

You can fly direct to the Azores from Boston or NYC I believe and then direct to Porto from there. Spend a night or two. It can be a nice way to break up the trip. I found it extremely cheap. A budget of about $100 a night for lodging is doable.

United has a nonstop from Newark to Porto in the summer. You could Amtrak to there from Union Station or pick up a connecting flight out of DCA, BWI, or IAD. Lilely the fastest way to Porto unless you want to stop in Lisbon first.
