HS Spring Sport Tryouts in LoCo--Why so Cutthroat?

Anonymous
Have any of the parents experienced this? We're talking Western LoCo HS girls' sports here. It seems like everyone tries out for everything and sometimes 30-40 girls show up to try out for 10-12 slots and 2 slots allocated for incoming freshmen. Some are not even decent or close to it. Our freshman was SHOCKED and didn't expect this at all and she is certainly above average at this particular sport.

We are a Potomac Falls family and any girl who tried out for the field hockey team got on, even those with no experience.

Most of the rosters are already determined prior to tryouts. Unless you are an amazing player you are not going to crack it, this includes freshmen who have been in the system a few years.

For the fall sports those in the system already know the training schedule for the summer, what team camp dates are etc.

Many of the coaches have been coaching these kids in club sports for years. Look at the most successful ones, they do it year after year because they have them in the system at by middle school.

What planet are you from? In FCPS, Mclean and Langley HS tennis tryouts has 55+ boys and 30+ girls for about 14 spots on the varsity if I am not mistaken. It's been like this for years.

OP--I am from the "freshman" planet. Do you have to be so nasty?

It's usually school specific and sometimes sport specific, OP. I have two (boy & girl) at a LoCo HS (not Western). The boy plays soccer and there were only 8 spots this year with only 1 being reserved for an incoming Freshman. First tryout was Monday evening and he reported that there were 30+ trying out. My daughter does track & field and anyone who wants to participate gets a spot. In the fall she does Volleyball and this past year was the first year they had more trying out than they had spots for. Both did swimming in the winter and again, anyone who wanted on the team could join.

It's why the club and travel sports are able to thrive even after the players reach HS. I know years ago when I was in a LoCo HS, a lot of the club teams disbanded at the U15 level because players left for HS sport spots.

I am sorry. It meant to be a "tongue 'n cheek humor", guess it didn't come out that way

I really hate it when it comes down to the coach making the decision on who make the team and who get cut. This is just terrible. in Swimming and golf or other individual sports, that is determined by the best athlete and the coach has no said in who make or get cut from the team.

I get that Potomac/McLean might be cutthroat for tennis due to a larger income bracket, but Western LoCo is not known for this. I guess the compete in everything craziness is slowly moving our way.

Sports have always been competitive in rural areas. Probably just more people.

LOL - Western Loudoun isn't exactly 4H and FFA anymore.

Why would the coaches.. aka the expert on their sport, team and their plans for the season.. not choose their own players? Who do you suggest does that for team sport? The point of tryouts are for players to show the coach that they are the best athlete for the team!!!

Why would there be 14 spots? I’d think there would be fewer than that.

My point was that this area is becoming more crowded, so there is more competition. Not that all of a sudden the area is now more into sports.
