Problems with a principal

Anonymous

Has anyone had any experience with taking issues with a DCPS school principal to a higher level?

Where did you go and what happened?

Thanks.

I haven’t, but if I did have a problem I would go to the Instructional Superintendent for the cluster. I think you can find those on the DCPS website or with the help of google.

If it’s a charter then... lottery somewhere else?

Our school has and the Superintendent got involved which lead to open meetings with the school.

It was good to get things out in the open that were ignored from request by the PTA.

Was this somethign that the Super was able to resolve, or DCPS generally. We are dealing with a principal who is a bully.

Wow, the principal is bullying you? Or is it your child?

Either way, yes you should contact the instructional superintendent.

Tell us who the bully principal is. Or I'll beat you up.

Parents at my school went above the principal to the instructional superintendent and eventually to the deputy chief of schools (above the instructional superintendent in the hierarchy). If your experience was like ours, you will be asked whether you have tried to address your issues with the principal first, and your email (if that's how your communicating) will likely be forwarded on to your principal.

There is a whole grievance process through DCPS. Check the website.

Would asking for the communication to not be shared with the principal would be respected? Out of decency would assume so, but who knows how things work.

I have so little knowledge about the system and the management which equates to very little confidence that my complaint would be confidential if I asked it to be. Which is why no one has complained for a year or more...

How do you want the instructional superintendent to act on your complaint if they can't share it with the principal? And why do you care if it is confidential? If it is a fact-based complaint you should have nothing to worry about.

If they share and act on it I am less worried, but sharing and doing nothing is my main concern. Then the principal will be even worse.

There are no guarantees. If you personally witnessed and can document specific incidents, you have to report it. If what you are concerned about is second, third-hand stories, or information that could easily be refuted or explained away, I would not.

If it's a charter I would call the DCPCS Board and file a formal complaint. The process is fairly easy and I got the results I was looking for.

Try putting that you’re returning to a non-airport location.
