vomiting with h1n1?

Anonymous
has anyone had this combo? is it like a stomach bug along with the flu symptoms?
or is it just nausea with a bit of vomiting?

ds has a sudden onset high fever, sleepiness, bodyaches, a sudden onset wet sounding cough, and has vomited twice in the last hour. All new symptoms in the past 3 hours.

I did not call the ped before 5 and feel pretty confident I understand when to call/seek help, but am trying to figure out if this is likely H1n1, or a stomach bug.

Have a flier that came home with my son's school papers and it mentions that vomiting and/or diarrhea can also be associated with H1NI. I don't have a medical background, but am a mom of 3 kids. Based on the symptoms you described, sounds like the flu.

I had it, and this sounds right on.

Ugh, sorry OP. You know it could be any number of things (and stomach bug is the most likely), but why take the chance?

So sorry - what a painful beginning to the weekend. I suggest you page your pediatrician.

Sounds like my last weekend with DH and two d's. It should be over in about three days.

Actually, if that was the H1N1 flu it seems as if it was as mild as the reports have indicated.

Why not go to the CDC website and read the official symptoms?

Yup--definitely sounds like H1N1.

What are the signs and symptoms of this virus in people?

The symptoms of 2009 H1N1 flu virus in people include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. A significant number of people who have been infected with this virus also have reported diarrhea and vomiting.

My nephew has confirmed h1n1, and he is vomiting.

op here. i spoke with the dr last night when his fever went over 105. we got it down with a bath and motrin. She was not sure if it was an intestinal virus or h1n1 based on the symptoms i described. he slept last night with one episode of vomiting. he seems very perky this morning and has kept a bit of toast and apple down, after vomiting this am again. His temp is in the 100-101 range. He still has the cough. I guess I'll just wait and see how he is later today. I am guessing if its h1n1 he'll get worse again and if its an intestinal bug, it will be over after 24hrs or so.
the peds office is moving this weekend and has no office to do a culture. Do they culture at minute clinic (or is it better to stay away from offices/people?).

My nephew had similar symptoms (in another state), and he tested negative for flu (quicktest), but the doctor still started him on tamiflu b/c of his past history with pneumonia and some breathing problems. Maybe you could call the ped office back to talk to doctor on call and see if they recommend you get a culture and have him seen somewhere like ER? It is my understanding if he were going to take tamiflu, then he would need to do it within 48 hours of onset of symptoms. However, I'm not sure what the protocol is for administering tamiflu. They may have only done that with my nephew b/c of his history and his age.

And keep in mind they do not give tamiflu to children under 5 I believe.

There is a stomach virus going around. we had it two weeks ago, DD picked it up at daycare, and she had it the most mildly. My DH had it the worst. Started with nausea/vomiting and developed into terrible aches/high fever, etc. DD's entire daycare class had it, teachers, and all the kids parents, too. We were told it was NOT H1N1...which has significant respiratory symptoms, which all the hallmark. If you have the nausea/vomiting which develops into respiratory stuff, then it could very well be H1N1

people are always erroneously labeling stomach virus as the flu. A stomach virus is an intestinal problem the flu is a respiratory problem.

If there were vomiting it would be very secondary and pale in comparison to the respiratory symptoms.
