I'm 40 and look gaunt and haggard. I would like to gain 15 pounds. I am 5'5'' and 120 pounds and I feel I look too thin for my age. I have no curves, I have a very slim figure and I'd like to be curvier and more womanly looking. I am the same weight I was in high school. I gained some weight with my child (who is now 5) and struggled to lose it but once I did I lost too much and now look too thin. Now it seems like my metabolism is too high and I can't gain any weight.
I eat fairly healthy and don't want to start eating desserts several times a day to put on weight. I noticed when I stopped drinking soda a year ago I lost a lot of weight and haven't been able to gain any since I switched to water. I eat about one dessert per day (like a chocolate pudding cup or a bowl of ice cream). This has not put on any weight. I already eat avocados, healthy fats and nuts several times a week and it's not doing anything for my weight gain efforts. In general I don't have a big appetite which makes eating large portion sizes more difficult |
OP here. Also wanted to add that in addition of stopping soda and switching to water, I also stopped eating out at restaurants and now cook at home all week except for one meal out every 2 weeks. This also has led me to be unable to gain weight, because I am cooking at home which is more healthy. |
Do you exercise? Exercise will help increase your appetite, and help make sure that the weight you gain, will be gained in the right places - especially if you strength train.
|
OP here. Zero exercise but I want to start. I'm worried though that once I start I will lose even more weight. |
Do squats and lunges and uphill walking. Eat lots of peanut butter and nuts. |
OP here. I can't stand peanut butter and the only nuts I like are walnuts. The other issue is that I really don't like meat. I'll eat some types of meat, but maybe 2-3 times a week. I eat scrambeled eggs every day for breakfast. I don't want to start eating super heavy, caloric food daily like fetticine alfredo. I'm not sure how I should eat though to gain weight in a healthy way. |
Yup, try the above for a few weeks. If it doesn’t help, add protein bars and protein shakes. Tons of healthy calories, low sugar, high protein. |
I just posted the above about protein bars and shakes and saw your response re: nuts.
If you start lifting weights, add rice cakes post-workout or high-sugar candy like Swedish fish. You could also add creative. |

I would not add uphill walking. Stick to lifting weights, no cardio. |
Do you like cheese? Super high-calorie. |
OP here. I eat tons of cheese and tons of full fat dairy (ice cream, yogurt, etc.). Hasn't budged my weight at all. today I was out shopping for the first time in awhile and when I saw my reflection in a store mirror I was shocked by how thin and haggard my face looks at 40. I think I would look better if I gained 15-20 pounds. |
Take mine! It’s free. |
Have you had your blood work done? Thyroid checked? |
Same. 5’4”, 136. Been trying to lose 10 pounds forever. |
