Hi-we are trying to plan a really special trip this summer and would love some advice. I will be around 5 months pregnant in June and was thinking somewhere in the May -June timeframe--we will also have a two year old with us. I would love the flight to be under three hours if possible and am not so worried about cost if it is the kind of trip we will remember--ex. we still think fondly of our trip to Hawaii at the Four Seasons. Any ideas would be great!

I know it may sound lame, but Chicago is a fun city. A TON of great restaurants, the Magnificent Mile, Shed Aquarium, Navy Pier, art galleries, museums, ball parks (baseball), and more.
Six Flags (which is a night and day difference compared to the one in Landover, MD) is about an hour drive too. I wouldn't recommend the rides for you since you're preg. (Congrats, by the way), but your two year old may have a blast. Southwest has great deals fairly frequently and I think the flight is only 2 hours. |
Bermuda? I have not been there with kids, but it meets your criteria and that is a great time to go. I loved it when I went 3 years ago and would love to go back. |
Charleston South Carolina, best warm beaches, lots of great places to go with children, very friendly. Charleston Place is really nice hotel 5 star, in the heart of the wonderful city. Ashville NC is another great city. Beautiful mountains, friendly people. Have fun with what ever you choose. I can not wait to go on a vacation this summer. |
#1: NEW YORK CITY. We stay on the Upper W Side, near Central Park, Natural History Museum and Children's Museum. Of course, there are a million things to do - and a ton of places to eat. Everytime we go we wish we had more time (we try to get there on long weekends). Next year we're going for a full week - still haven't made it to Ellis Island!
BOSTON. I haven't been there w/ kids yet, but I can't wait to go. The history is great. PHILLY. Franklin Instutute, Liberty Bell, Const. Hall, Art Museum. Of course, you can do 1 of the direct flights to an island from here. |
OP - Are you looking for more of a relaxing vacation (as relaxing as it can be with a 2 year old!) or one in which you play tourist? I guess I ask because a lot of people are giving you cities to visit, which are fine if that is what you want, but if you are looking to relax a little bit more, I would recommend the beach. We also have a 2 year old and have been to Boston with him twice. While he enjoys running around and seeing some things, he is really too young to be into museums, history, etc. |
I agree that two is too young for big cities and touristy stuff. For me, that would be a HUGE headache. How about a more rural beach or small town, where things are a little laid back yet there is enough to plan, say, one easy outing per day? Maybe like a kid-friendly B&B in a small city near the ocean? I'm trying to think of the perfect city, but my brain is slow today. Sorry. I did like the Asheville NC recommendation, but I think that's probably not easy to get to in the time frame you mentioned.
oh, how about Charlottesville, VA? |
In terms of places that are close, I second Charleston and would also like to put in a plug for Savannah - the most romantic city in the south. |
If you want to really get away how about going to Puerto Rico? We went with our 1 yr old and stayed at the Conquistador hotel and it was a blast. The pools were never crowded or you could take the hotel's private boat over to the private island and totally relax. The grounds were beautiful and the food fantastic. Trip to remember for sure -- we even went to the rainforest one afternoon and traipsed around. |
I love both Savannah and Charleston, but I would be wary of going there in May or June. We went to Savannah in April for a couple of days and it was HOT. It is not always like that at that time, but you never know. We did walk around the city, but we were sweating and it was not comfortable. We were also in Charleston last April and it, too, was hot one of the days we were there. I was pregnant and we had a 2 year old and it was not fun. |
Thanks for all the good advice. I do think we are going with a more relaxing tone..well as relaxing as we can manage. Curious on Puerto Rico--how long is the flight and is it direct? Kind of like that it's still part of USA in case I have some sort of issue with the pregnancy(hopefully not but maybe will manage some anxiety). |
There are direct flights to San Juan PR from DCA and BWI (I'm not sure about IAD). Pretty reasonable too - we got our flights for about $290 per person 3 months ago! |
The Conquistador is a beautiful resort. We used to live on the island when I was a toddler and it wasn't called the Conquistador then, but it is where my parents would go when we wanted a weekend away from San Juan.
You should check with some of the big travel agencies like Apple because they sometimes run packages that include airfare for excellent prices. |
Ft. Erie Canada. You can often rent a house in Point Abino's gated community. It is a great safe place to go, close to Niagra Falls, historic Ft. Erie, and just makes (in my opinion) for a great vacation. If you can get into the gated community rentals, you will enjoy quiet nights, time on the beach, safety and security. The last week of June there is a Strawberry social at the Rich's (owners of Rich foods). Rentals there can be costly, but not all that different from Delmarva. I like that so many of those who rent out their houses are American, and you don't have to convert into Canadian dollars.

We are looking at summer vacations too and for the life of me, I can't figure out how a beach vacation with a 2 year old (or in my case twin 2 year olds!) would be relaxing? We'd spend all day chasing them up and down the beach and in and out of the water (they are roamers.) I would think a city vacation would be better - children's museums to play in, playgrounds, pools, etc. Things to see and do. |
