I was at a party this weekend and one of my friends was wearing a real cute outfit and shoes. She bought them at JC Penney and Kohls. Turns out, many of my friends get their clothes at those stores. Neither are terribly convenient, but if I can get some stylish outfits at a lower price, I'll make an effort to check them out. What do you all think? |
Love Kohl's for me and the kids. My MIL gets a lot of our kids clothes at JC Penny, and some are quite cute. Can't speak about the adult selection tho. I also like Target for me and the kids. |
You've never been to a Kohl's or JC Penny? Did they not have them where you grew up? I ask because when I was growing up, I was hardly aware of any department store other than Pennys! I went into a Nordstroms in college and about fainted at the prices.
I'd say 60% of the contents of my closet are from Kohl's. I have to hunt a little bit, because I don't like synthetic fabrics or any kind of applique, and that's a lot of what they have. But I can always find something in a breathable fabric and flattering cut. And rarely spend more than $20-30 per garment. We also order online a lot for the kids. |
I had never heard of Kohl's before moving here (there aren't any where I'm from) but ever since I discovered Kohls, I love it for kids' clothes. Cute and decently made at good prices.

We get all of our underwear at JC Penny. None of our clothes b/c they are generally cheap-looking and ugly. |
I got my daughter's crib at Penney's. From what I understand, it's the same supplier that Pottery Barn Kids uses. |
I don't like Penney's, but I LOVE Kohl's.
I don't think Kohl's necessarily offers the same quality of clothing across the board as higher-end stores, but you can definitely find some fashionable/current styles and some higher-end items if you look around. And they ALWAYS have coupons. I never go without at least at least a 15% off coupon in hand. It pains me to spend a lot of $$ on clothes for myself, and I can find things at Kohls that are very reasonably priced. Last winter I got a beautiful pair of Vera Wang black satin pants there to wear to a formal event & got a TON of compliments on them, and they were not that expensive. I have also gotten Ralph Lauren things there for a reasonable price. For casual clothes, I like the fit of some of their Sonoma twill pants & cords. Beware they do have lots of "mom" jeans/pants, but I have found a couple of flattering fits and I stick to those styles/brands. I also get some of my kids' clothes there. Last winter I got my husband a really nice Columbia jacket - on sale and with a coupon, it was a steal. They have brand-name sneakers too, for kids and adults (new balance, skechers, etc.). Just look on their website. |
it takes some hunting in both stores to find good stuff, but it can be done, and the cost-savings is often worth the time. |
PP, where do you get your Kohl's coupons? I never see any. |
I used to buy almost all of my clothes from Penney's. I'm short, and they have the best selection of affordable petite clothes I've found. (Now I'm a SAHM and rarely buy anything for myself) |
Kohl's rocks...if I could only clothes shop at one store for everyone...Kohls would be my pick. |
I like Kohl's quite a bit also. Definitely good for kids clothes.
I used to like JCP, but it's fallen out of favor. Definitely not worth it for women's clothes (IMO). Their clothes just don't seem to fit right, and look cheap. I've also bought a few furniture pieces from JCP, thinking it'd be a good deal, but the recliner has turned out to be a piece of junk after just 1 year - the stuffing is coming out, pieces have fallen off, etc. And, another thing to watch out for with JCP is prices! They advertise that things are deeply discounted, but they jack up the prices to start with. You can find the same items at Target for much cheaper sometimes. So, basically, I'd say that Kohls is worth the trip, but not JCP. |
I like getting stuff for my DS at Kohls, but rarely find good looking clothes for me. |
Another one is Sear's. I got some really cute Fall clothes for my son there this year for what they should cost, as opposed to Mini Boden, Gap Kids, etc...
Seriously, the clothes look just the same for a 1/4 of the cost! |
I have a Kohl's charge so I assume I'm on the mailing list. I get them in the mail & sometimes by email. And if you use your Kohl's charge, you also earn "Kohl's Cash," which is like a cash-back reward. I really don't think I've ever NOT used a coupon there. They have them all the time if you get on the list. |
