Hair straightener makes hair too flat and stringy

Anonymous
Wondering if anyone can advise. I have long, fine hair that is randomly wavy in some parts. I just blow dry it (totally incapable of doing the whole blowdryer/round brush thing) and then touch up the random wavy parts with a straightener. However, lately this has been causing my hair to become super flat and stringy when I do this, and I just end up pulling it back. Looking for solutions!

Get the reckon brush that’s also a hairdryer. No need to do the round brush thing. It’s great.

I would suggest a quick trim up.

-signed, also thin hair. Medium-long length.

People here like that revlon blow dryer brush. I've never tried it - I just use a paddle brush when I blow dry my wavy curly hair and it gets reasonably straight - but that would probably be a good solution.

Use a straightening/polishing brush. Not a flat iron.

really depends on what your hair is like to begin with. If you have coarse hair, straightening it will make it look like a horse tail. Finer hair seems to do better with them, try a blow dry with a straightener attachment

I have super fine hair and I just got the revlon thing. It is awesome! I can’t do the brush and dryer thing either.

That said, it basically makes my hair look flat-ironed.

Do you have a really good hair dryer? Like a twin turbo? That thing makes my fine hair dry and straight in 3 minutes but with a lesser hair dryer I get waves sometimes.

Finally, mousse and hairspray.

I have hair that sounds like yours. The Revlon brush dryer didn’t do much for it except add effort to the blow drying process.

I have a lot of razored layers at the moment and I use mousse, Aveda Texture Tonic, and a Rusk finishing spray to get it messy and rock n roll looking. Even if I straightened my hair or used any number of a billion products, the annoying wave would pop back in by lunchtime. So I just own it now, lol.

I find that the way I dry my hair makes a big difference before straightening. I blow dry my hair completely upside down so it gets some great volume at the roots. Blast with cold air when it's dry. Then, when I straighten, I start at the bottom and just do the bottom half and only straighten up near my scalp/roots if it really needs it. You can also tease a little bit of the bottom layers to get some more volume.

I can't use products or else it gets greasy and flat/stringy.

Is this the styler that everyone here raves about?

I have fine hair too and using a straightening brush v a flat iron helps. Also, you might just need a haircut- if it’s stingy looking at the ends it’s either split ends or too much product. If I want my hair perfectly straight I’ll sometimes add a a layer of clip in extensions that I cut to the same length as my hair to get a little more volume. Because I’m not adding inches they blend really well and it prevents that stringy look at the bottom.

What brand do you use?

Couple of suggestions:
Get a shorter hairstyle, blow out just the top layer and volumize the crown area.

Also try lowering your heat settings. The temperature may be too high on your straightener, and damaging it.

Try the DAFNI - it gets my hair straight but keeps the volume.

It used to only be available on QVC, but it looks like Costco sells it now (and it looks like the new version is smaller and lighter than the one I have, and charges upright).
