Current Newspapers File Bankruptcy

In a place so transient as DC, it has been wonderful to have the Northwest Current to inform the community about local issues. I was afraid this was going to happen once the Maryland Gazette revenues vanished. This really makes me sad. The Patches just haven't caught on enough to be as comprehensive.

Oh, no! I noticed that they didn't publish this week. No paper covers local issues the way the Current does. Certainly not the vaunted Amazon Post.

This will be a real loss if the Current can't reorganize and come out of bankruptcy. There is no other news source that covers the kind of things we discuss in this forum -- the Hearst playground or new development or whatever.

It seems simple, but they send reporters to neighborhood meetings, and report on what happened. What amazes me is when I've actually been at the meeting and then read about it in the Current, the article pretty much summarizes what actually happened. With almost every other news source, you read the article and wonder what meeting the reporter went to, because it doesn't sound anything like the one you went to.

Yes but we wouldn't pay for the paper. Oh and local businesses that advertised there seem to have disappeared as the Amazon boxes piled up in our recycling bins.

Either you have an online business model or you are toast. Loved the Current and its many versions.

I was always impressed by how much reported news the Current always had -- stories where a reporter goes out and talks to people and digs things up. List servs and blogs are mostly just regurgitation of press releases.

I was also impressed by the fidelity of their reporting. Several times I was at events, and then read about it later in the Current, and always felt the reporter had captured the essence of the event. That was in start contrast to the Post or WCP.

I think that signals curtains for the current.

Not yet. The Current published this week, and they stated that they are re-organizing under Ch. 11, not shutting down and liquidating. Hooray (for now).
