What to serve with crabs?

Anonymous
So I’m going to steam crabs - DH’s favorite - for NYE, but i’m a little befuddled about what to serve with them. Looking up online, the suggestions are mostly things that just make sense in the summer. I usually also make sausages and roasted potatoes, but looking for other options.

I would make a corn chowder and maybe a light salad.

That's because the local crab season is only open in the summer. It's a summer food. They burrow in the winter, so if you get them, just know they've come a long way. Does he like oysters? 'Tis the season.

Cheesy biscuits, mashed potatoes, maybe a nice quinoa rice side? Costco has these packets you just microwave for a minute and they are delicious, also maybe a corn dish?

The locals make crab soup (which has beer has a primary ingredient), which is very good and would be perfect in winter.

Agree soup would be great and maybe cheddar bay biscuits (they sell a box mix if you don't want to do from scratch). Corn is traditional but you could do something like Paula Deens corn casserole if you wanted. I'd be good with crabs, soup and biscuits though. We usually have shrimp steamed with old bay too.

Alas, he likes the Alaskan crab. He’s slightly embarrassed by it, but it’s the truth.

That all sounds wonderful. I want to come to your house!

Are you buying Alaskan king crab? It comes already cooked, FYI. I like it with just a baguette and champagne. You could add a salad.

Even in season a good chunk of the crabs at crab houses and seafood places still come from TX and LA.

Do hush puppies, corn salad in lieu of corn on the cob, past salad

Well, that's not "crabs."

With king crab, I would serve fancier sides, maybe a salad, potatoes au gratin, creamed spinach, stuffed mushrooms, etc. It's not the same meal as a summertime backyard crab feast. Oh, and champagne, not beer.
