Could one, consistent with the rules, apply early to both Yale and Rice?

Anonymous
A friend told me his child was deferred by Yale and rejected by Rice. That surprised me, because I didn't think one could apply early to both of those schools.

Am I wrong?

No, Yale's SCEA would forbid someone from applying to Rice ED. But I hear that people do it anyway (although I'd think the Common App wouldn't allow it, but don't know for sure).

I would assume the school would also not allow it.

guidance counselers should not allow it either..unless one is non-binding.

Does Rice have Early Action?
Anonymous
Only if one (or both) is early action and not early decision.

My BFF got into Rice early decision.

Shouldn't be able to, but some people don't care about commitments or restrictions or integrity. No reason not to believe it, since it's not like there's any honor in a rejection and a deferral.

Congratulations to your BFF!

But what are you doing on a parenting site, especially in the middle of the day?

This is not true. Below is from Yale website

Applying to Other Colleges and Universities
If you are a Single-Choice Early Action applicant to Yale, you may apply to another institution’s early admission program as follows:

You may apply to any college’s non-binding rolling admission program.
You may apply to any public institution at any time provided that admission is non-binding.
You may apply to another college’s Early Decision II program, but only if the notification of admission occurs after January 1. If you are admitted through another college’s Early Decision II binding program, you must withdraw your application from Yale.
You may apply to another college’s Early Action II program.
You may apply to any institution outside of the United States at any time.

Yeah, but Rice has only 1 ED round and it's binding, so you can't apply to both Yale SCEA and Rice ED.

You are right that it is against Yale's rules. I don't know if it is possible to break the rules. It seems possible to me that one could apply early to both schools, but doing so it would be unethical and unwise.

I am surprised the common app does not have automatically built-in restrictions for this sort of thing. Hopefully they will do it soon.

OP here. I'm not sure if they were gaming the system or made an honest mistake, but apparently neither the common app nor the high school counselor/recommender blocked them from doing it.
