I want to either put a basic window in a side wall of our brick colonial or enlarge the existing window. Basic bedroom windows, just want more sunlight. NW DC. Rough estimate of cost? Is one cheaper than the other? |
The big expense will be someone to cut the hole. The framing and window are not a big deal. I would guess at least $2k with labor. |
$15k |
Enlarging the existing one will be cheaper. I would make sure whomever you are asking to do the work is a solid mason. Agree the labor is going to be in the $2k range at least for adding a window, maybe less to enlarge, but there is a limit to that because that wall is part of the structural integrity of the home. |
This is at least triple the cost. At least |
It depends on where and how your are doing it. We enlarged two windows in our basement that were not load bearing walls and hired a mason for I think $400 (he did a lousy job and we should have DIYed after watching him but that's a different issue) and then DIYed the windows but each window was $500 or so. |
OP here. Thanks for the feedback. I'll now start the contractor search. There Is No Way We Are DIYing this! |
Why not DIY? Installing windows is one of the easier things we did. |
We did two medium windows in our cinderblock / brick 1940s colonial. Cost us $3k all in. |
We used Window Universe... I'd give them a 7/10. They were okay, communication was hard. |
I agree with this. It will be about $5k or so especially if they need to put in a lintel for structural support. Enlarging is the way to go. |
