I am a healthy 29 year old man. I drink 2-3 glasses of wine every night over a period of 4 hours. Am I an alcoholic?

What would happen if you went home and decided not to do it one day? A week? A month? |
take the tests here:

We can't answer that for you.
But I'm the OP that started the thread about stopping for a while (I was at 1-2/weeknight, 3-4/every night on weekends). I can tell I feel better in the mornings when I don't drink. So I'm taking a break. How do you feel every morning? And can you not have a drink? |
I am grumpy and disoriented in the morning. |
People obsess over whether they fit the definition of an alcoholic. The real question is whether you're drinking more than you want to and whether it's hurting your health and whether you are able to stop drinking when you want to. And whether there is someone in your immediate family who suffers from addiction whether it's alcohol, drugs, sex, or food. If that is the case, you should do something about it - whether it's to cut back on your own or go to a 12-step program. |
New poster here You have to enter your email to see results of those tests. ![]() I am a 40-something female that drinks about the same amount as the OP (2-3 glasses of wine each night.) I'm fairly small in size (5 foot 3, size 2.) The heavy drinking has mostly started within the last year or so. Although I feel like I still "function" fine (I've never bailed on a responsibility due to drinking), I have definitely seen effects. 2 years ago I ran half marathons in sub 1hr 50 minutes, now it takes me about ten minutes longer. |
And are greatly increasing your risk of cancer. Congratulations.
What are you going to do about it? |
Good suggestions here if you're looking to cut back -
http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/681923.page DH and I are thinking of subbing the wine with herbal teas. |
If you're asking that question, the answer is yes. |
I don't know, but you might have cirrhosis of the liver in your future. |
I used to too, and I wish I still could. I loved the feeling and the relaxation. But then I turned 35 and started waking up with hangovers at 5am every morning. Just can't do it anymore.
If you're interested in cutting back, try pushing yourself to do a week or even five days without it and see how you feel in the morning. Realizing that I felt like shit every morning and then seeing how it felt when I wasn't drinking that much every night was enough to make me give it up on a daily basis. I still have a drink or two on weekends. |
I probably drink about the same as you. I could and do stop drinking at any time. If we run out of the wine I like, then I just don't drink. We might not get my wine for a week or so and that is just fine. Its disappointing, but I move on and drink some lame herbal tea. Some nights, I have one glass. Some nights I have 3. And because I am drinking this over a 4-5 hour period, I never even feel drunk or even tipsy. I don't feel like an alcoholic. But, its not about how I feel, its about how you feel.

I think 2-3 every night means you're drinking too much. Not necessarily that you're an alcoholic. Cut yourself off for a couple weeks and set internal limits that you adhere to after ie, 2-3 nights not drinking or something. It all comes down to how difficult it is to quit or scale back.
I occasionally notice I've been drinking every night for a couple of weeks and I just take a week off and reset. It is very easy for me to do that and I usually feel gross when drinking more often...as long as you're in that boat you're ok. |
Sounds like you're bored ... what else can you do after work that's fun? |
