This look is 2010 coded

I was just thinking she looks like an influencer going apple picking or filming herself placing pumpkins on the front step. Leggings, oversized shirt, and over-the-knee boots? Where's her slouchy knit cap?

Grey and brown. Boring. Leggings and boots. Basic. Boyfriend shirt as a jacket. Tragic.

Except for the trip to the UK has she worn any actual color since the inauguration? White, browns (several shades), black, gray? And everything is menswear oriented.

I hadn't seen the last post before writing this one, but military green is about the same thing.

I love the whole thing. She does casual chic so well.

It is the perfect outfit…
… for going to the mall or a football game.
.

It looks like something I’d wear to the barn.

I feel like it's a weird miss for her. She's not usually under-dressed for events. Even a sweater or something rather than the shirt-jacket would have made this a little less "apple picking/barn/football game" and more "business casual". But I tend to think those pants are just irredeemable for business wear. It looks like she's wearing tights. I'm really surprised there are two posters here who think this is a great outfit for a business type event. This was honestly such an easy assignment -- basically any pants with any top or cashmere sweater or blazer, or any simple dress, or any of her many pencil skirts with that same black turtleneck all would have been fine. This isn't the type of fashion mistake she usually makes (usually her problems are with going too costumy and over-thinking the assignment -- pitch helmets in Africa, etc.)
I agree with PP that she is leaning hard into the menswear look this administration. I like the look for her, and it is flattering on her because she is tall with broad shoulders -- I think she often does it well, but this one just isn't working for the occasion. This would be better for "visiting the disaster stricken area to help hand out water bottles" or "taking underprivileged children to the zoo" (note -- she should do that).

Meh. She’s addressing her staff and volunteers, and looks perfectly appropriate for that setting.

Like most people, she sticks to what looks good on her and what she’s comfortable in. I love most of what she wears.

There are more than “two posters” who like this outfit. This wasn’t really a “business type event”. It was more of an in-house thank you to her staff and volunteers.

Maybe it's the reading a speech from a podium with a gold eagle on it that has people confused?

She was on her way to help pack care packages for military families.

So you’re saying the FLOTUS shouldn’t be in professional dress at work? I wouldn’t even wear that outfit to my job and it’s nowhere near as important as hers.

Well aren’t you special, here’s a gold star.⭐️

I’m not sure whether to blame her or her advisers for the multiple faux pas. Here we go again, another blunder. Clothes fit for mucking pigs and high heel boots?
I think it must be intentional. It’s inappropriate, which is insulting to the audience. This must be her own doing. The banana dress, this, they must be her way of saying “I hate what you are making me do”.

Well that makes a huge difference. Although I think that’s a scheduling blunder to make the thank you to staff so close in time to the packing boxes — it looks a little like she just swung by, not like it was a planned thank you to staff. And I think putting a long jacket over the outfit instead of the shirt jacket would have taken 30 seconds and looked more appropriate.
