Painting Trex

Anonymous
Has anyone painted their trex deck? How has it held up?

We have trex from 2005 or so. It's extremely discolored and ugly. It was put in by the previous owners, but would have been invovled in the trex class action lawsuit. We bought the house after the case had closed, so there's nothing we can do about the bad trex. We have power washed it, used deck treatments as well as pool chlorine, but nothing budges these stains. Friends refer to our deck as a snow leopard because of the way it looks.

We just painted ours with the opaque Behr deck paint. It's basically the same as painting a wood deck, as far as I can tell.

UGH. We have to paint it every year. Peels, etc.
It was the type that wasn't already colored. Of course, later they made that, and so what was the point if it before, I ask, because I might as well be painting wood.

PP that you are responding to. I don't know what it says about me, but my deck looks just like the OP's (same color) and it didn't occur to me that it was defective. I guess I assume that everything is going to look like moldy garbage eventually and we just paint it. Yes, it peeled in a lot of places almost immediately, but I just accept it for what it is. The trex came with the house though, so I can see being angry if I paid a premium for a trex deck.

I guess the trex is nice because it does not warp? That is the only benefit I can see.

It's great if you have the transcend. This is my deck 9 years after installation. I spray it with a hose when i need to clean it. This deck has been slammed for 9 years with sun, rain, deep freezes, and 100+degree heat. No warping, no peeling, no fading, no scratches despit dragging furniture all over it, and no maintenance.

This is not meant to be painted. Replace it. We have the Veranda brand. Scratches easily but no issues.

Well! With friends like those!

Seriously, get new friends if you think their comments are meant to put you down. Life is too short. It's a deck. Friends should care more about the beer, BBQ and good conversation around the firepit on lazy summer evenings.

Did you try copper sulfate solution? That breaks up black mold spores. It will also damage plant though so be careful with it. This is the main ingredient in a lot of siding cleaners.

Prime it first. Then paint. The right product will last. Don't send it to a landfill.

I would get some nice potted plants and cute deck furniture and not worry about it.
