If the midterms end up being a bloodbath for Rs, I think there's a good chance that Trump's hold on the R party will be loosened.

There's no way they're going to avoid getting beat up in the midterms. And at that point, the conversation shifts to the Presidential primaries. Trump won't be part of that conversation, and his hold will have dramatically lessened.
