I posed this question before the election, suggesting if Trumpelstiltskin was elected, we might be facing a diminution of the US's position in this role. Yup, turns out Trumpdoodle is an idiot and everyone knows it.

Agree, to some extent. But, OP's point is well taken. The US is no longer the world leader. We all know this, yet some continue to support the direction we're taking. All because they were punked by President Obama for 8 years. SMDH.

What exactly did you have in mind? China? Not exactly the free world. Russia? Nope. Other countries? Not exactly "leading" by most measures.

We're entering a power vacuum and I can't foresee who will end up on top.
Trump's decision to defund scientific research and the EPA will de detrimental to the US in the long term. And if his plan to privatize our infrastructure pans out, we will be crumbling faster.
German will not be able to support the rest of Europe and I fear that the EU is barely holding together at the seams.
Russia is increasing its sphere of influence, but through nefarious ways.
China's credit rating got downgraded from Aa3 to A1.

So who knows what will happen? There is the rise of nationalism in various countries. Perhaps we're due for a world war?
