What do you think, and what's life like in particular for a non-Catholic student?

Crickets...my non-Catholic DS is trying to decide between BC and Emory. I think he likes the city of Boston better than Atlanta but I am not comfortable with certain aspects of BC such as the fact that they offer no birth control in their campus health services.

In the Catholic view of the world, apart from Georgetown and Notre Dame, are there any other Catholic-affiliated schools that can match BC in terms of brand name and overall education?

So send him to CVS for that. Both my kids rarely use the campus health service at their colleges - only when they are sick. DD goes to her regular gyno here for birth control. Seems like a bit of a manufactured issue. If you have an issue with the service to others philosophy at BC that would be more of a concern that Jesuit education isn't a good fit.

In the Catholic view of the world, one would not rank schools.

If you live in NY - Fordham
If you live in the Midwest - Creighton and Marquette
On the West Coast - Gonzaga, Santa Clara, USF and Loyola Marymount

I don't see that as a reason to cross a school off the list. Besides, CVS gives my DD birth control pills for free.

The joke about BC used to be that it was like a high school with ash trays. Nowadays, it doesn't have ash trays.

It's in an urban environment - healthcare is easily accessed off-campus.

What about LGBTQ students. Would they feel embraced and have a voice at BC?

It is a good, well-respected school that is highly regarded, at least in the northeast US. It has a bit of a "drunk rich kids" reputation, but that seems to be mostly in the past. It attracts smart and motivated students and is a good "brand name" school in its region. It is near Boston with easy access to transportation.

I don't know which is the "better" school, but I think it's fair to say in the NE BC is a "better" place to have graduated from, and in the SE Emory is. Whether that matters at all is up for debate.

Went there. Loved it. Great alumni network with loyal supporters. Boston is a fabulous city but many students (at all area colleges) don't use it wisely and stay on campus too much. BC has a great community spirit, service is a Jesuit hallmark and that's evident, and academics are as strong as you want them to be.
