Virginia resident whose kid has gotten into UVA (honors), but also Berkeley. So is it worth it to pay twice as much to go to Berkeley instead of UVA? |
Nope. |
Depends.. - If you can afford it, of course! - On what your kid will study, If this is computer science or robotics, CA is the place to be and Stanford is king |
YES!! Amazing school with fantastic reputation and wonderful diversity. Congratulations to your kid!!! |
Hell no. |
Need direct admit for CS -- it's an impacted major. |
Being very smart and willing to work hard is King. My husband is in CS and most of those folks didn't go to great schools and they are doing very well for themselves. They are all great schools but you can also go to a no name school, like my husband did and still do very well. |
Honestly, yes. UVA is homogenized and your kid will know 100s of students there already. Berkeley is unique, world famous, a new beginning, everything college is supposed to be. |
Ten years ago, maybe. Now, no. Berkeley faculty had a huge turnover with all the UC cuts and incentivized retirements. Now in rebuilding phase, does not have the same level of prestige it once did. |
Lol only if you're ultra liberal. Otherwise, forget about it |
Nope. In addition to the tuition cost, you're now paying for travel back and forth to the west coast. |
OMG, yes! Amazing school, fantastic reputation here and abroad, and so not like D.C. or Maryland/Virginia suburbs.
Yes, yes and yes! And congrats!! |
Did Berkeley put a strong effort into recruiting domestic non-California kids this year? On Facebook I've seen a lot of east coast and midwest kid's friends get in. |
Excuse to take trips to NoCal > car drive to UVA |
Berkeley is a higher ranked school and so very different the more- of-the- same he will get at UV |
