Eastern High School track open to public?

Anonymous
Is the Eastern High School track open to the public when school is not in session? I've seen people on the tennis and basketball courts after school and on weekends but track is not as visible from the road.

Call the athletic director and ask. They control the hours that the tracks are available to the public at each school. It also varies by season.

I'd be interested to know what you find out. It would be nice to have a track with open hours nearby.

We are there for DCYO on Saturdays and I think the gate is open. I'll try to look next time. DCYO is on spring break this week.

OP here. I contacted the athletic director and she replied that it's not open to the public. They pick the gates after the track team practices.

FYI, the Gallaudet track is often open. I've run on there before on Saturdays.

Eastern High is not for the use of Capitol Hill.

Tracks at DC high schools have a special status. Normally HS facilities can only be used with a use agreement, but all tracks are open to the public.

Check out this story:
http://www.popville.com/2014/07/dear-popville-local-tracks-open-to-public/

Notice the picture, with the text:

District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) High School Tracks are available for use from Mondays through Fridays during the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 8:45 a.m., and 4:45 p.m. until dusk.

Usage of these facilities outside of normal operational hours of the respective school building will be strictly prohibited without an approved Building Use Agreement.

The running lobby is strong.

BTW, I really wish DCPS would proof-read their signs before printing them.

it fucking should be. Seriously, ALL schools need to figure out how to open their facilities to the public. I know council is studying this now. Our taxes paid for this.

I meant that as a sarcastic comment as I agree with you.

I think one of the concerns is that when they leave facilities open to the public, items that are say, not appropriate for students to see, are left and discovered by students/school employees in the morning. My understanding is that it's less of a purposeful exclusion of the community and more a necessity to keep the track safe for students.

Don't they have custodians and facilities managers? And having seen some of the graffiti in elementary and middle school bathrooms, I doubt high schoolers in DCPS are going to be phased by much.

graffitti is less of an issue than needles and condoms.
