Self contained K classroom in FCPS

Our daughter may be placed in a self contained K classroom in FCPS. Anyone has experience with this type of setting? Good? Bad? Is the curriculum the same as that of a K? Any input appreciated.

I believe No Child Left Behind mandated that the same curriculum be taught, but the small class size and lower teacher-student ratio make the instruction more personal. Their scores should also be incorporated into the school's overall performance, where before they were excluded.

What is the child's diagnosis? Will she be in with other children of the same, or a mixed class?

If it is a self contained K class, I would assume that all children are kindergarteners. Or am I working? The diagnosis is MERLD.

I have a kid in a MCPS self-contained classroom (1st grade now) with mixed disabilities. The curriculum is the same but is adapted to the class's and my kid's needs per IEP. I am happy with the placement given our other choice (a regular classroom with 28-30 kids and push in/pull out services). That would have been a disaster. With the SC classes the number of kids goes way down--I think we're capped at 12 and there's a para, which there would not be in gen education. In K there were 6 kids with the teacher + para so it was a great ratio. All the classes are together at lunch and recess and my kid now knows a number of kids from the NT classes. His specials are also SC. Kids with more abilities can rotate into the gen ed classes for different subjects. Where I'm not happy is that there are kids who are more behaviorally impacted than my kid so he's losing instructional time as the teacher has to frequently redirect those kids and in K you will definitely see this but there's nothing you can do.

There is no specific curriculum in FCPS. All teachers have to teach students to master the Standards of Learning across the various subjects. You can find them by Googling VDOE Standards of Learning. In your child's class, she would receive supports, accommodations and as needed, modifications. For example, a math standard is that students can count the 100. Your child's teacher will work towards achieving that throughout the year, just as any other kindergarten teacher would. And as others have said, she will work towards her IEP goals.

I know the ED self-contained classes in FCPS are usually something like, a class with K-2, a class with 4-6 or etc.

She could easily be the only K in that room. There will probably be K - 2 in the room.
