This seems performative, like a theatrical setup. My guess is, he says this, even though he has the power to order the files released, but at the same time has Bondi announce some sham "investigation" and then shrugs and says "hey I tried but now the files are sealed, nothing I can do" - because he doesn't actually want the files released but has to have some way to give himself cover.

It's amazing that Trump can give Argentina $40 billion in taxpayer money, levy tariffs on our allies and shutdown USAID without consulting Congress, but he "is powerless" to release the Epstein files.

He knocked down the East Wing of the Whitehouse with zero approvals, zero consults, so, yeah, if he wanted these files out there, he'd jsut do it. Lawful or not.

This seems like a plausible guess but also supports the theory that “blowing” (or whatever specific term was used, I forget) was meant in the sense of giving outsized attention to a potential donor.

Today Kate Manne published a Substack post about Katie Johnson’s allegations against Trump. It includes a lot of backstory on both Johnson’s allegations and other allegations of sexual assault against Trump, then a transcript of Johnson’s story as taken from a video statement. For me, the Trump background was old news but I didn’t know anything about Katie Johnson beyond “she alleged rape but withdrew her court case.”

I hated reading the details, but I feel like, for those who can stomach it, it’s part of the task of bearing witness on behalf of the victims. All the abusers, including Trump, deserve to be seen without their mask of civility and judged accordingly.
