Spike Lee, When the Levees Broke.

The book 5 Days at Memorial by Sheri Fink also discusses how systems from the levees and pumps broke down and the resulting impact. It focuses on the tragedy and horrible decision making at Memorial Hospital but does a thorough job of discussing the entire ecosystem of Katrina and it’s aftermath, as well as some of the preceding history.

John McPhee’s book Control of Nature, published in the 90’s, also provides great insight into what it takes to keep New Orleans from being consumed by water generally.

5 days at memorial is a rough book due to subject matter but well written and measured.

I am gobsmacked by the 2nd 100-year hurricane hitting New Orleans in less than 20 years.

The climate gods are sending us a message.

Hitting on the anniversary of the previous 100-year hurricane is just the cherry on top.

No gods are involved. It’s just the result of warming atmospheric conditions and oceans. We are now caught in a negative feedback loop of environmental collapse and the only way to stop it is to dramatically cut carbon emissions and halt deforestation. The nations of this earth cannot coordinate such a mutually beneficial outcome because they seek to gain a marginal advantage over the others.

The US attaining a net carbon negative position would actually be a massive position of strength from a national security standpoint. Unfortunately it’s going to take a Republican proposing “The Manhattan Project of Climate Change” for our country to do something. But it will likely be too late by the time “conservatives” see the wisdom in that policy objective.

Meanwhile, the most Red/Republican parts of the country are getting wrecked the hardest by climate change. It’s kind of mind boggling to me

Did you see th me video of Al Rocket reporting live and getting smacked in the face by the waves? Why? I mean, move out of the water, but also why is he even there. Makes no sense to me. He’s old, has health problems and is a veteran in the field. Why is he taking such risks?

Sorry for all the misspellings above. Al Roker.

Plaquemines Parish is not New Orleans. It's a completely separate levee system. And overtopped is way better than beached.

Approaching New Orleans as a Cat 3 instead of 4.

I agree but apparently he WANTS to be there. He's the lead of the NBC morning shows and is worth $70 million. There's no way he'd be there unless he wanted to be like he said.
