How do you think the fall will be in fcps?

I completely agree that it's going to be either hybrid 2 days a week or concurrent. There's just not enough space for the kids to be there 4 days a week. And I do believe that FCPS is going to follow the social distancing guidelines. Even at 3 ft there's not enough room.

We’re talking about next September like it’s February. Things are already way better now. There’s no way we’re doing hybrid next fall. We’ll be so out of step with the rest of the country.

Couldn’t they have at least done “just concurrent?” I will only get to see each student who is in person once per week! Do you know how hard it is going to be to establish comfortable classroom routines and rhythms? I hate it!

As a parent I have been pushing hard for 3' distancing and 4 days in-person (like most of the world). CDC's new guidelines influenced by NEA and AFT did NOT help with that one.

I was hoping we could do the 4 day a week schedule starting mid march when we will all be vaccinated. Then, yes, use the three feet rule. This inconsistency in scheduling makes it really difficult to teach the kids anything!

I hope the current model at least gets them in the door, then they can evolve it from there.

I hope teachers are working with parents who are comfortable with it to let administrators know that we should try the 4 day thing this spring- at least with younger kids, in preparation for figuring out fall.

Lol. We’re never getting 4 days this spring. And 3 feet still can’t accommodate the absurd class sizes in FCPS. my son used to sit shoulder to shoulder at a table w 5 other students in his class of 30. This year, during covid, he has a class of 28. You can’t get 3ft distance and fit classes that size unless you build/rent more space. We already had trailers in non-covid times.

We can with just the in-person kids this year.

Good for you but that's not the case for the rest of us. Maybe we can fit 20 kids 3 ft apart and that's a big maybe.

Laura Jane Cohen has already promised that there will be an FCPS DL option for families next year.

Hybrid/concurrent are the name of the game until there is a widely available childhood vaccine

Not likely. We’re not waiting on a vaccine that most kids won’t take in the first place. She’s one voice...and am increasingly irrelevant one. None of this RTS would be happening if she had her way.

She's not the only person on the school board that's mentioned a DL option being offered next year.

Brabrand promised FCPS-run DL. Megan McLaughlin, the most consistently pro-RTS, has also.

I think the CDC guidance says it doesn't recommend in-person until the number of new cases per 100k people is below 50 within the last 14 days. Currently the number as of today is 364 within the last 14 days. Even if cases drop significantly over the next 6 months I don't think we will come close to being below 50. Unfortunately FCPS will be hybrid this fall and will likely be like that through all of next year.

We've been out of step which much of the country for the entire year. I don't see that changing. At best we will be at hybrid.

Sure, but let’s see what it actually looks like. In-person will be the priority next year. Whatever DL is offered will be the necessary evil to deal with the holdouts.

At best? No. Full time in-person. Things are rapidly changing. A month ago, nobody would have believed any RTS would happen this school year. The in-person teachers will largely advocate for normalcy as well.

It’s the number of new cases within the last 7 days/ 100K people, and with the numbers we had last summer Fairfax was below 50 per 100k. With vaccines we will meet that again this summer.

I love how DCM speaks for everybody. I knew for a fact school was going to happen in the spring, I've been saying since last summer. I say we're going to be hybrid or concurrent in the fall. I'll happily prove all of you wrong in six months.

Going back last summer cases went to down to 60-65 and we know now we missed the fall window. So why couldn’t we get to 50?

We all need to take a deep breath. The percent positivity is dropping by .2 every day. It’s 8.3 today, per the FCPS dashboard: https://www.fcps.edu/return-school/fcps-confirmed-covid-19-case-reporting. It’ll be near 5 in the next 15+ or so days which is a key metric in determining community spread. FCPS prioritized teachers for vaccines. No one is taking the cdc advice as gospel. Nothing is a given, but I don’t think FCPS can keep this up much longer. Teachers and everyone who is handling the logistics madness of hybrid/concurrent wants to be back full time in the fall.

Stay home. Wear a mask.

Exactly this.

Also, vaccines should be more widely distributed by them. So even my friends who are immunocompromised will probably send their kids to school. Immunocompromised kids not so much... which is why full DL will still be an option.
