Not sure about firms or in-house at a corp, but take a look at some trade associations’ Form 990s, where the top salaries are disclosed. I’ve seen some Fed/Gov Relations execs well north of 500, but also some closer to 200.

I make $285k as a VP of communications and marketing for an association. I work about 9 hours most days, and generally put in a few hours on the weekends and at night. During busy times or media crises, I easily work 15 hours a day and all weekend. Constantly being available to work and handle issues is one of the hallmarks of a job like this. I take my laptop everywhere on weekends, just in case.

Pulled in low 400s at a private equity shop two years out of college, but was given the boot after two subsequent years. Hours are intense (60-70 consistently) and unlike prior in investment banking, all of the 60-70 hours are intense. I'm now in grad school, married, and the plan is academia until I come up with something else.

A family friend makes 400-500k as a “consultant” in the college admissions world. Her clientele is primarily insanely wealthy embassy families and heirs of foreign businesses.

I’m a physician. I can pretty easily make $150/hr doing contract work.
$250k/yr is $5k/wk. so that would work out to roughly 33 hours/wk.

I would say that’s about right for me. I have a job where I get my benefits and have some downtime sometimes making $110k for 20 hours.
Then I have some contract work 16 hours/wk, and I make another $130k there. So not quite $250k, but pretty reasonable hours.

But not untrue... my uncle did a ton of details in Montgomery country and would regularly make 150k-200k per year basically directing traffic.

If you work as an hourly consultant on a contract with no benefits, the money does add up. There is a lot of low paid it workers

All the benefits/insurance is covered through spouse’s government job. I know at least 4 families with this setup.

pharma/med devices 270 corridor jobs... basically director level and up you're clearing 250k with your bonus. Most people who have been in industry since college and have any sort of drive are director level by 40. The few driven people I know in Pharma are senior director level by mid 30s and move on to VP and C-suite in their 40s.

The issue is what they do after the company decides they're done with you as a VP/C-suite in their 40's. Too early to retire, there's not that many of those jobs to go around, and then you're competing with the next batch of directors moving up. Plus I think there's a ton of turnover in pharma/med. Lots of musical chairs, somebody's usually left holding the bag (though everyone thinks it won't be them).

You move on to one of the small biotech startups in Boston/Cambridge

OK, but there is plenty of data (DOL) etc that will show this is the very top of the earners.

OP, very few people (percentage wise) are bringing in 500k salary without bonuses. It's working in jobs with big bonuses that mostly put these people over the edge. That said I think my plumber probably pulls in about 250-300k based on what he I. Assets that I know about!

Unless you own the firm, no you can’t make that much as a government contractor. The government caps what they pay individual FTE and there are tables for certain jobs.
