Then it must be:

- your kid told you she was the only one without a phone

- you assumed

- it was a private school with one 6 grade class consisting of about 7 kids total

None of these is true in my case (not the PP but same situation).

My son has access to devices at home. We will get him a prepaid call-and-text device when he starts middle school next year. I don’t want him wandering down the streets walking to school staring at a phone.

Kids need them more today. When we were kids, the emergency device was a quarter in your backpack for a pay phone. When was the last time you saw one of those?

Mine has a flip phone because she walks home from the bus by herself.

Not believable- and if you don’t disclose the school and and grade, it’s even less believable.

My DS is 12, 6th grade ES and no phone. He has an iPad though so he can chat with friends. His friends all have phones but old crappy ones and plenty of them are FARM kids living in section 8 housing. I think his friends in section 8 have them because their parents work all the time and it’s an easy way to get in touch with them. My DS doesn’t ask for one so we didn’t push it. We’ll revisit in MS as it would be more of a necessity when he’s doing after school activities.

This is exactly my son! He's the only kid, I believe who doesn't have one.
He has an iPad at home.
He will get one at the beginning of 7th.
Young children have phones now. They walk out of their houses staring at the screen, walk to school staring at them.

I didnt get one for DD until the school had a bus
re-shuffle and DD got on the wrong bus and I didnt know where she was. Sure she is not a small child but the fact that I didnt know where she was and she couldnt contact me directly scared the *&# out of me. She is in the 5th grade. The next day she got my old phone and I got a new one. Next year she'll be coming home alone and I want her to be able to contact me.

My 6th grader has a flip phone that we got at the beginning of the year. He never answers it and only uses it if he gets locked out of the house. I really want to put off a smart phone as long as possible, but he's gunning for one for 7th grade. I'm hoping to wait until he's 13, which would be the end of 7th grade for him.

I’m the poster you quoted. My son will ask the office, a friend or the coach to borrow their phone if he needs to reach me.

Having a phone has nothing to do with looking at the screens as they can do that on a tablet or tv or computer. The logic makes no sense.

I don't allow mine to share their phones and if they do they lose the privilege. Give your kid a basic phone or gizmo watch if they need to contact you. As an adult, I don't let other people's kids on my phone. If its an emergency I will call for them but otherwise no. If you don't think its ok they have a phone, they have no need to be on mine or my child's either.

This is what my 5th grader has so I can text him to go to aftercare or not, etc. He can use his iPad for texting/email/games after school.

I put a numeric lock on the house. Never locked out again.
