Another BASIS parent here. The outings are minimal. I don't care. My family takes advantage of all the city has to offer on the weekends and in the summer. The rest of the country comes to DC on field trips, we don't need field trips. I have watched the local middle and elementary school go on ski field trips and amusement park field trips and one day in NYC field trips and spend a lot of time out of the classroom on minimally academically enriching outings and I don't think it is helping the students prepare for high school and college.

Great that it doesn't matter to you, and I hope it doesn't matter to your kid, but it's silly to make it seem like Basis has things they don't. We all know what they do, but no reason to mislead either. Whether or not field trips are great high school preparation is not necessarily what matters to every kid or parent. kids do not have downtime or run around time or sunshine or even time between class to do anything but travel from class to locker to class and back again. One of the things my DC loved about being in Drama for 6th and 7th grade (they do not offer it this year in 8th) is that tthe awesome drama teacher would take theclass to the atrium at the portrait gallery when they had to work on writing for plays or journals. Between walking to the atrium, exercises and practices/stage work, was the only time he did not sit still indoors while in a class. It's not everything nor is it crucial for most, but it is what it is. |
