South Arlington and North Arlington Schools

Would HB even report separately? All the kids there are officially students at either Yorktown, WL or Wakefield.

Also, even though it's a lottery school, there would be some sampling bias associated with HB given who is attracted to seek admission there in the first place.

There are a lot of variables not being considered. IB at W-L allows for tracking out of Wakefield. I would imagine that would create a bit of brain drain at Wakefield. Not there aren't smart kids at Wakefield, but that might decrease their numbers.

Check college admission rates. W-L's student body gets into more elite universities and at higher rates.

This was true in one anomalous year.

What about admission by race/sex/SES?

The latest SAT results show that white kids at W-L have, on average, higher SATs than white kids at Yorktown. But that doesn't mean all W-L kids are doing better in the college sweepstakes than all Yorktown kids.

You're comparing the results of a subset of WL to a larger sample. You do know about sampling error do you not?

Besides it isn't even true - the latest numbers state the opposite...

Average total SAT score for white students at W-L in 2015: 1862
Average total SAT score for white students at Yorktown in 2015: 1830

White students at W-L achieve higher Raul's and track to better Universities than white students from YHS.

And for those of you think the boundary for wakefield will move north to relieve some WL overcrowding, not going to ever happen now. The county is on a course to build a stem high school next or near Henry. The plan is to give WL zoned families priority, then every one else. So, that will allow the boundary to stay the same and keeps wakefield predominately minority, and further the brain drain from that school.

I think south Arlington should just form it's own county. It is already so segregated in every way, we shoukd be able to make our own decisions. County does not want to invest down here anyways unless it absolutely must.

I think the County should be required to reserve a certain amount of space within each zip code for low cost housing. Not just in Arlington, but across the entire country. That way burden would be spread at least a little more equally.

What's up with the hate hard-on some of these Yorktown posters have for W-L? Are the posters actually, like, high school football players? Or kids who are mad that W-L had a better Ivy acceptance rate last year and a few years before that?

I'd bet you the so-called W-L hater isn't even a Yorktown person, but someone in Fairfax trying to push another IB school over W-L.

I guess I'm too stupid to understand this! Can you explain what you mean?

You flatter yourself if you think that people in Fairfax give a rats ass about your inside-Arlington bickering.

Rest assured no one in Arlington cares about Fairfax.

Nonsense.

Actually white kids at Washington-Lee HAVE achieved higher SAT scores than white kids at Yorktown for the last four years in a row. Three and four years ago it wasn't by that much, but for the last two years it's been a difference of over thirty points. (It was 60 points in 2014.)

I can't speak to the college question except that I saw somewhere on this board that more W-L than Yorktown kids got admitted to ivies either this year or last.

north Arlington would never allow all that revenue to go away. The commercial taxes from Crystal City and Pentagon City and the hotel and meals taxes from all those hotels are what are keeping their property taxes down.

Yes, there are upsides to a diverse school environment but some of the most racist people I know attended diverse/integrated schools. Going to a school with sizable populations of different ethnic groups can break down negative stereotypes OR reinforce them, depending on the experiences one has.

The greatest inference to be drawn here is that there are some white parents at W-L who could not give a hoot about the sub-par performance of non-white students at W-L compared to Yorktown. That is a shame, since there are a whole lot more of them at W-L at Yorktown.

That was not my understanding of what this new high school will be. I am pretty sure the county is talking about a technical high school at the Career Center site, not a high school to rival TJ. Can you share more about this new high school? I read a description somewhere and it sounded far more like a high school for the non-college track crowd.
