Well the way I do it is I wipe first with toilet paper till everything is wiped off, then I use water to rinse my bum. I don't dip my hand in the water,my hand is on my bum as if I was still wiping with toilet paper, but sans toilet paper but with water and To describe the process, suppose you have some dirt on your hand and you wipe it till all the dirt comes off, then you rinse your hand with water, same process

Do you always use your left hand?

I never thought about it till you asked, but yeh I actually use my left hand ( did not even know this, had to actually think about it lol, I guess habit )

It's Sunnah to only use your left hand for that, right? And the right hand is for eating.

Is that really atypical? Seems pretty standard to me.

One thing to keep in mind, is that Islam and mosques don't really do "memberships" or some kind of tithing to a mosque. Zakat and giving to charity is required, but Islamic institutions are really very loosely organized and there's not a formal relationship between leadership/parishioner, or monetary tithing to religious leadership/organization. I would probably bet that those rates are also posted averages, and not permanently fixed for all or varying needs.

From my experience yes, they are pretty steep, and this very atypical, usually mosques are there to help the community and any money raised is money that members willingly give as charity when they come to the mosque so they can provide members with services at extremely low prices or free. I got married at the Islamic Center in DC and had various counseling sessions there and they never charge a fee for any of those services. I don't see them as a business. How could low income families, people ever be able to afford these fees?

My guess would be that not many people attend his mosque or use his services. Since he openly approves and even marries gays, etc., he's probably pretty shunned by the majority of the Muslim community. I've read that some Fridays, he has no one at all show up for prayers. He's got to raise money to keep open somehow...

Larger mosques and Islamic centers have sponsors, big donors (especially foreign donors with $$ in this area), that help spread out some of the costs and feeds. Unfortunately, progressive/liberal Muslims don't have a lot of support, so it looks like the Imam above is largely self-funded. In an ideal world, he would be able to provide beneficial services for free and still provide for his own life - but that's not really possible with such a small presence and influence.

Well yeah, mainstream Mosques live on a Salafi dime, generously sponsored by KSA, who tries to spread their interpretation of Islam worldwide. Liberal mosques don't enjoy that generosity.
