DH and I both have blue eyes... and DD has green eyes but DS has blue eyes. Green eyes are a recessive trait, relative to blue. So both DH and I must have had a green gene somewhere. |
"Only the Mother is certain." |
Blue is recessive to green. So who else did you sleep with? |
Anyone have violet eyes in their family? |
Children change. There is no guarantee what color anything they will have later. |
My sister had black hair as a baby and a toddler, but it turned blonde as she got older (meaning turning five through the present). |
Multiple genetics degrees here. Many people on this thread are discussing eye color as if it is a single gene trait like sickle cell or cystic fibrosis. It's much much much more complicated. Eye color is determined by many genes as well as probably some environmental factors. Obviously eye color of the parents plays into it and yes there is truth to the fact that brown is typically more dominant over blue, but as somebody said this is not like Gregor Mendel with the pea plants and punnet squares you all remember from high school. |
My mom was so excited when preg with me. My older sister was a toe head so so blonde white. And it stayed that color. So she thought I was going to be. Nope as she puts it out came a dark hair thing!!! And tells the nurses they made a mistake! (I'm in my 30s)
Now a friend of mine has dark brown/black eyes and she married a man with jet black hair and very dark eyes. Both her kids blonde and blue eyes! |
And dark brown hair sorry forgot |
+1 |
OP here - she is 9 months, so the hair color seems very much here to stay. The first dd was born with dark hair that fell out quickly, then grew in white. My mom says my hair did the same thing when I was born. |
Do you mean towhead? ![]() |
I'm the only one in my immediate family with blue eyes. Everyone else has green eyes. |
Really not that complicated. Most people have difficulty telling the difference between truly blue (a bright blue color) and grey = blue plus the brown with dilution factor. One blue gene, one brown gene = green, which can appear as hazel, flecked, or a mix. Many people have difficulties describing colors. There are also many different shades of brown, but they are all on a spectrum. Hair color more difficult! Violet eyes = so little pigment that the red in back of the eye shows. Can be a little creepy. |
PP, this is the genetics person again. I know it's not a big deal, but I just don't like anyone posting wrong info about genetics. Eye color is not just a "blue gene" "brown gene" etc. There are at this point at least 15 genes thought to be associated with eye color and likely more to be discovered. Yes, there is definitely truth the the whole brown usually being dominant over blue, but really, it's possible for your kids to have pretty much any eye color, no matter what the parents eye color is. |
