Weird Housekeeper Story

I don't get the OP bashing as well. It is completely inappropriate for the cleaners to take a shower without asking for permission. I would fire them. This is not some normal thing cleaners do and have the expectation of...

Nanny here- I've showered at work MANY times. When the toddler is napping and I have the monitor I have rinsed off the chlorine so my hair doesn't turn green, and after running around outside in 100 degree weather I have also showered. A couple times I even showered before a big deal and blow dryed my hair. I often work 14 hours a day, and if my Boss has a problem with me taking a f*cking shower then maybe I'll just become one of those lazy nannies that sits on the couch and doesn't play in the dirt with kids all day.

Get a life OP, you sound like a horrible employer.

No reasonable person would expect a cleaning professional to suddenly appear naked in the bedrooom -- come on! I don't think OP's behavior is weird at all.... Although it is true for VOICE recording she would need consent of the person being taped in DC (which is a two party consent state, I believe), I don't think this applies to visual images being taped (w/o voice)....

Secondly, YES, it is incredibly strange that the cleaning service showered at the house. WTF? If my cleaning service ASKED to shower I would probably say yes. But, I think it is strange not to ask first. I love alll the pseudo-liberals who are coming down harsh on OP for not being more compassionate the cleaning service... totally irrelevant here....the point is that her trust to the cleaning staff has been compromised to some extent...... And that this is not a normal business practice. THere are many jobs that we get dirty at and that doesnt' mean we get a chance to shower until we come home frmo work...

Plus, if the cleaning is being paid for by the hour then OP is paying the cleaning staff to shower! Crazy!

Do you have a statute or caselaw to support the distinction between voice and image recording and OP's right to install cameras in her bedroom to record employees without their knowledge? You may be right but I'm not at all sure you are. I think it's a bit more complicated than how you've put it but if I'm wrong I'd love to know the basis for this info.

You have a chip on your shoulder b/c your SITUATION isn't a fair comparison.

Housekeepers are there to CLEAN! You are there to watch after little ones, which means your hours are long. Two people coming in to clean a house are not there 14 hours a day. Nor are they swimming in the pool, watching their hair absorb chlorine.

If you were my nanny, I'd have your ass fired for being such an asshole.

I'm an attorney so I'm not talking out of my ass completely, although I admit I'm not entirely familiar with how this would work in the domestic employee setting. In any case, I still think it's kind of fucked up. The shower thing is weird, yes, but I think filming them is worse.

What if OP and her husband film themselves? and oops - accidentally forgot to turn off the camera? (OP, I'm not saying you and your husband do this, but nor am I knocking it either!)

How can anyone prove what they're doing in their own rooms is illegal? Must they show evidence of sex tapes to prove their "innocence" in this case??

What about a nanny cam? I'd put one in the nursery. Is that illegal? It's a bedroom after all.

the only people who have to worry about their hair turning green from chlorine are fake blonds. Stop putting chemicals in your hair and you'll have one less thing to worry about. Actually 3 less things...green hair, the money spent to bleach your hair, and remembering to keep it up so your roots don't show. Be true to yourself and stop trying to be something you're not...a (dumb) blonde! But...as a nanny, I too have showered at work as well. And I've done laundry as well. Gasp!

What I think is strange is that the OP is setting up a video surveillance system, with sound! Why?

The whole story is strange.....maybe a little too strange?

Maybe this is another instance where FBFNFTM has struck again?!?!

Good point, PP, the question is-showering, filming, trolling or all three?

I remember researching this after a nanny cam thread on this site- it is reasonable to expect privacy in a bedroom or bathroom in a house you are working and therefore the owners are not allowed to film nannies in these rooms- I think you make an interesting point about a camera for the OP personal use and don't know how that would be handled but I do know that you can't record audio of other people no matter what room! OP should maybe set a boundary with her house keeper but definitely don't admit to the filming because she could get herself in trouble.

I don't think it's reasonable to expect privacy in someone ELSE'S bedroom if I am a nanny. The nanny's bedroom, absolutely. Any bathroom, absolutely.

And pp who is a nanny. of course I'd let my nanny shower at my house, an all day every day child care situation is very different. The nany may legitimatley eat, bathe, even nap at my home if it's appropriate to what the child is doing. (your example of after a pool is a perfect one) But you do sound like a jerk and if people knew what you were really like I doubt they'd want you for a nanny.

My philospohy on nanny/secuirty cams has always been - TELL people they are there. Ensure the behavior you want. Be honest about the cams. It's what I would want others to do for me.
