Hello. I am a frequent reader on DC Urban Moms & Dads and I noticed that my name was mentioned on a discussion board. Allow me to introduce myself.
My name is Andrew Moss and I would like to serve as the Ward Four Representative on the District of Columbia State Board of Education. As a former classroom teacher and a parent of a pre-school aged child, I want to take an active role in the educational reform of the District of Columbia Public School System. Education innovation and reform are crucial to ensuring our students are prepared to compete in tomorrow’s society. However, in order for it to be sustained and successful, we must take a systematic approach and invite all stakeholders to the table to ensure all voices are heard. While classroom experience and curriculum development are indeed important, I also bring an intimate knowledge of education policy, federal funding oversight and education administration, which makes me the more well-rounded and best candidate. Currently, I am a compliance officer at the U.S. Department of Treasury responsible for federal funding dedicated to community development. With the District of Columbia’s recent $75 million federal “Race To The Top” award, I believe I am uniquely qualified to ensure our students and schools receive the resources they so greatly need as we continue to implement key aspects of school reform. Additional qualifications I have for this office include six years as a DC Public School teacher, program director of an after-school literacy program active in several DC public schools (DC SCORES), a Master’s Degree in Education Leadership, and previous positions as a curriculum developer and staff development manager for federal and non-profit organizations. My law degree and experience in policy development also enhances my ability to interpret and implement federal and local mandates. I am a fourth generation Washingtonian and I have been actively engaged in community development for over 15 years. I sincerely believe that improvement of our schools is linked to collaborative efforts of all stakeholders. A vote for Andrew Moss means a vote for experience, commitment, and leadership. Let’s educate our children together! Sincerely, Andrew Moss |
Thanks Andrew, do you have a website where we can learn more about you? |
Last night's forum went well. Only one of the nine candidates on the ballot, Arkan Haile, failed to come. The other eight, acting Councilmember Sekou Biddle, Tom Brown, Dorothy Douglas, Joshua Lopez, Patrick Mara, Vincent Orange, Alan Page, and Bryan Weaver, were there for the full time. They made opening statements and then answered questions.
I recorded the question-answer session. If you would like to listen, it is at http://tdcna.org/forum.htm. |
Dorrie - I have responded to your request.
JSteele - Thank you for your interest. I will post my website this week after the designer has made the changes I have requested. Also, the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club is hosting a forum for all of the SBOE candidates on Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at 6:30pm at the Human Rights Campaign on Rhode Island Ave. NW. Please come out and learn more about who will be representing you. Sincerely, Andrew Moss |
Few media endorsements are handled as seriously as that of the various "Current" newspapers. The editor conducts long, in-depth interviews of each candidate. Today, the papers' endorsement for the At-Large race was released. Good things were said about a number of candidates. Orange was praised for his experience and knowledge, Mara and Lopez for their energy, etc. About Bryan Weaver, the editor wrote:
"During our meeting with Mr. Weaver, we were amazed at his grasp of the issues facing the District. He is the most knowledgeable challenger we have interviewed over the past 16 years." So, the endorsement went to Weaver, correct? Wrong, they endorsed Biddle because they don't think Weaver is well-known enough to win. Of course, his endorsement by the Current newspapers might have helped him to become better known. |
By the way, Bill Quirk is a registered Republican for those of you paying attention to the Ward 4 SBOE race. |
It's a non-partisan office. |
The "Current" Newspapers' endorsement of Biddle is bogus and completely and unfounded. Why would you simply endorse a candidate because you think they are "well-known"? Shouldn't endorsements be based on principles and progressive viewpoints. Biddle will simply be a rubber stamp for the corruption by the Gray/Brown camps. Davis Kennedy (Editor of the "Current" Newspapers) is a joke to support Biddle. I could have understood if he had supported Orange or Weaver because they really have a true understanding of the issues facing our city, and who cares if Orange would be confrontational. We need someone to stand up to that corrupt elected body who are supported by big money developers.
I hope people really take a look at what is happening around them, and think for themselves and not let a newspaper determine their vote. Concerned Voter |
Except when the newspaper endorses the candidate you favor, like Fenty, or Orange.

Bryan is a great guy. I've known him for years and appreciate his ANC work as a ward 1 resident. He'd be great as a commentator on Kojo's show or head of a city agency or something. But. Knowledge of issues and ability to change or create policy are not the same thing. He doesn't always play well with others. The powers that be (K Street not Hillcrest) don't really have an interest in his brand of activism. I'm not saying he shouldn't be elected, just that he won't this time around. If he replaces Jim Graham one day, then he might be more sellable citywide. Say what you want about Sekou, he's got the focus on education and child welfare that we need in at-large seat. Nobody else stands out on that front IMHO. Vince Orange needs to shut the [bleep] up! You had your chance(s). You blew it. Get thee to a lobbying firm. |

Moss received the endorsement of the Current Newspapers for the Ward 4 SBOE. Found his Facebook page if anyone else is interested. Sounds like he is straightforward, and not a politician trying to step up to the City Council. Has anyone found anything else on him? I would like to know more about his positions on education topics.

Andrew: Please don't sock puppet. |
I have decided to support Bryan Weaver in the At-Large race:

FWIW, Catania has endorsed Biddle (http://martinaustermuhle.com/four26/). I'm still up in the air, torn between Jeff's policy of choosing the one he likes best and what appears to be the Current/Catania strategy of endorsing the one they think is most likely to defeat Orange. |
